Chromebooks get new features for stronger integration with Android devices

Google is making improvements to quality of life by tightening the integration between Chromebook and Android. New Phone Hub features, near sharing improvements, and Bluetooth connectivity improvements make up a new set of features rolling out to Chromebook and Android users.

The Phone Hub is getting improvements aimed at giving Chromebook users a distraction-free experience. So far, Phone Hub users have been able to reply to text messages, check their phone’s battery life, enable tethering, and more. Now, with the latest update, users will be able to access their latest photos, even if they are offline. Photos will automatically populate the Phone Hub, which appears under the Recent Photos section.

If invested in Google’s ecosystem, the Nearby Sharing feature has been a godsend, allowing Chromebook and Android phones to seamlessly share files between each other. With its latest update, Nearby Sharing will now allow users to securely share Wi-Fi credentials from their Android smartphone to their Chromebook.

By heading to Android’s Wi-Fi section and tapping Share, users will be able to select Nearby and send it to a nearby Chromebook. At this point, your Chromebook will be able to connect to the Internet without typing any Wi-Fi passwords. Of course, it goes without saying that this will save the Wi-Fi password on the device permanently, allowing it to connect seamlessly from now on.

Bluetooth headset and accessory users rejoice! Quick Pair will be available for Chromebooks later this summer. By turning on the Chromebook’s Bluetooth connection, it will automatically be able to search for compatible Bluetooth devices that are in pairing mode. Once detected, it will only take one step to set up and connect it. Best of all, the connection will be saved to your Google account, making your previously connected accessories seamlessly connected moving forward regardless of the product. While these improvements should enhance the experience, Google states that there’s more to come, so stay tuned.
