What ports does the MacBook Pro 13 (2022) have?

During this year’s WWDC keynote, Apple introduced an all-new version of the MacBook Air, along with an updated variant of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Both models come with the new Apple M2 processor, but while the MacBook Air has changed a lot on the outside, the MacBook Pro is exactly the same design as before. So, if you’re wondering what ports are available on the 2022 MacBook Pro 13, they’re almost the same as the previous model.

This is unfortunate because one of the most important features of the MacBook Air is the return of MagSafe. This gives you a safer charging experience because the magnetic connector means you can pull the cable as hard as you like and it won’t drag your laptop to the ground. With two USB4/Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack, the 13-inch MacBook Pro now has the worst port setup of any modern Mac. With that said, the headphone jack has at least received an upgrade.

MacBook Pro 13 ports (2022)

It’s worth taking a closer look at these ports, because there’s more to it than you think. Let’s start with the USB4 / Thunderbolt ports, both are on the left side. Thunderbolt usually offers plenty of versatility for any device it runs on, thanks in part to its 40Gbps of bandwidth. But one of the big reasons people like Thunderbolt is the ability to connect two 4K displays at 60Hz, or multiple monitors in general. It’s great for people with complex desktops – the “professionals,” if you will. But the Apple M2 chip inside the 13-inch MacBook Pro still has the same limitations as the Apple M1, meaning only one external display can be connected, regardless of resolution.

It is worth noting that you Can Connect multiple monitors to your MacBook Pro, but only using a different type of dock with the DisplayLink driver. Docks that use Thunderbolt, DisplayPort Alt Mode, or MST capabilities do not work on this laptop.

Another feature of Thunderbolt that does not work with Apple Silicon is the ability to connect external GPUs to the laptop. This might allow you to get much better performance for your creative workloads, but arm based processors like the Apple M2 don’t support it at all. Without these two features, Thunderbolt can only be used for data transfers, and at this point, there aren’t many benefits over regular USB ports.

The only other port on the MacBook Pro 13 (2022) is the headphone jack, which, fortunately, has actually been upgraded this year. What this means is that the headphone jack now comes with support for high-impedance headphones, which means you can enjoy high-quality sound if you have headphones at a volume level like the Sennheiser HD 650. For headphones with an impedance of up to 1000 ohms, the headphone jack can Now significantly more power savings, so you may not need a dedicated amplifier to use it. It’s great to see, and it’s something Apple has been adding to most Macs since the 2021 MacBook Pro models.

And that’s all there is to know about the ports in the 2022 MacBook Pro 13-inch. Physically, the ports haven’t really changed, but at least Apple has increased the headphone jack specification with support for high-impedance headphones, which is a welcome upgrade.

The lack of a redesign reduces this model a bit, but that shouldn’t stop it from being one of the best Macs out there. It’s as powerful as the new MacBook Air, but with its active cooling system, it should be able to maintain that performance for much longer. And even if the hardware doesn’t change much, the software will continue to get improvements with updates like macOS Ventura, coming later this year.

The MacBook 13 (2022) comes with an Apple M2 chip that promises more CPU and GPU performance, in the same design as before. It now supports high-impedance headphones from the headphone jack.
