Rage Against the Machine donates $475,000 to reproductive rights organizations

Rage Against the Machine will donate nearly half a million dollars to reproductive rights organizations in Wisconsin and Illinois, the band announced on Instagram Friday night.

“We are disgusted by the repeal of the Roe v Wade Act and the devastating impact it would have on tens of millions of people,” the group wrote. “More than half of the country (26 states) is likely to ban or severely restrict abortion very soon, if not immediately, which would have a disproportionate impact on the poor, working class and BIPOC undocumented communities.”

The band revealed that they raised $475,000 by selling charitable tickets to their concerts at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

“Like the many women who organized advanced railroads of resistance to challenge these attacks on our collective reproductive freedom, we must continue to resist,” they wrote.

The statement follows news on Friday that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. The case, Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization, completely denies the 1973 decision that guaranteed federal constitutional protections for abortion rights.

Rage Against the Machine is among the many artists who spoke out after the Supreme Court’s decision. Phoebe Bridgers made her voice known at the Glastonbury Festival in England, where she led the hymn “Damn the High Court!” with the crowd. Billie Eilish, who also performed at Glastonbury, expressed her anger on stage as well.

“Today is really a really dark day for women in the United States,” she said.

Many other artists, including Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, and Harry Styles, have taken to social media to tackle the topic.

Also on Friday, Lizzo announced that she will donate $500,000 from her upcoming “special” tour to support abortion access groups. Live Nation will match her donation, making the total amount $1 million.
