Billie Joe Armstrong’s response to Roe v. Wade: ‘FK America’

For Billie Joe Armstrong, the sentiment behind the “American idiot” still holds true.

The Green Front leader voiced his response to the Supreme Court’s decision to repeal the federal abortion protection that Roe v. Wade had offered during the band’s “Heyla Mega” tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer.

On stage at London Stadium, Armstrong slammed the Supreme Court and the United States on Friday night, just hours after the landmark decision, vowing to move to the UK and shouting “Damn America”. He added that he was “giving up” his US citizenship.

He continued, “There is a lot of damned stupidity in the world to go back to this miserable excuse for a country.” He also assured the audience to take what he was saying seriously: “Oh, I’m not kidding, you’re going to get a lot from me in the coming days.”

Since the decision was announced in the past 72 hours, other artists and musicians have begun using their shows to condemn the government’s attack on abortion access. Taylor Swift, Pearl Jam and Phoebe Bridgers are just a few who have shared their aversion to judgment, with other artists like Lizzo and Rigg Against the Machine pledging to donate to reproductive health organizations.

British singer Lily Allen on stage joined Olivia Rodrigo, who played Glastonbury Festival on sentencing day, to dedicate “Fuck You” to the five most voted judges: Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. and Neil Gorsuch, Amy Connie Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh. “We hate you! We hate you.”
