Not only are the characters and story of the HBO Max series interesting and often hilarious, but the look and feel of the series is packed with interesting elements, thanks in large part to the amazing visual effects made on the series. The Peacemaker’s pet bald eagle is clearly a standout, but there are plenty of other impressive items – including a sort of “quantum locker.” Introduced early in the series, the cabinet is a room inside the home of Peacemaker (John Cena) father Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick) and is a seemingly endless storage space for the various weapons and helmets he makes.
But while the on-screen locker seems endless, in real life there are some limitations on size and that’s where Wētā FX came in with VFX Supervisor Mark Gee recently telling ComicBook.com that having space really looks and feels endless It was an interesting challenge.
“It was an interesting concept that James described as infinite space,” Gee said. “It could be said walking into this room where he has all these helmets and these devices, and he will stretch to infinity. So, that was just a summary. What was depicted in the set was basically one or two layers of those cabinets, and that’s all you saw Everything beyond that was all CG. So, the hard part was making this feel unlimited, especially since we were at eye level on a lot of those shots. There are only two shots where you are at the top so you get to see the dearth of space there. We tried So much about the design of the tanks. Will it look like a view of the city at night? Will there be astral spectacle or aurora borealis, or will it fall out of black?”
He continued, “And we went through all these kind of tests and concepts to do that. The hardest thing was getting down at ground level, looking back through all those tanks, making them believable, and seeing that infinite space going back to where we ended up going was. That we built a stadium so everything will sort of show up and the tanks can go back as far as possible.”
Gee explained that in the working concept, they had tanks set back nine kilometers with small vaults still visible to give an idea of the size of the space created by the CG. As for the ceiling, they eventually went for a plain fluorescent lit look that ended up working very well.
“We thought, ‘I’m not sure what that would look like,’” Gee said. “We kind of dismissed it at first, but it worked perfectly because you have these vanishing points for the panels and the ceiling, and you have a real perspective looking at that plus the lights are back on. to space. It worked really well, but it was a concept that we went through several rounds of trying to solve. But in the end we got there. It was the actual expansion of the tanks as well, and this was a concept we had no idea what that would look like. And we played with that, lockers go in and out, fall off the ceiling too. But in the end, it all ended well. “
