Chinese box office: ‘The Stars Light Up’ Second Weekend

The emotional domestic drama “Starlighting” topped the box office in China for a second weekend. It was almost 40% larger than it was on its first session.

The film grossed 296 million yuan ($44 million) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, far ahead of Jurassic World: Dominion’s 65.2 million yuan ($9.7 million). After four weeks in Chinese cinemas, “Jurassic World” raised $4,132 million.

Starlighting tells the story of a devious funeral director who has the chance to meet an orphan girl. The encounter changes both of their lives. Produced by Lian Ray Pictures, directed by Liu Jiangjiang and starring Zhou Yilong as the man and Yang Inyu as the girl.

In its opening weekend, it made $31.8 million (213 million CNY). After ten days in cinemas (plus previews), it had a cumulative total of 795 million yuan ($119 million).

“Ode to the Spring” debuted in third place with a modest dose of 17.8 million yuan ($2.7 million). The film is a drama about ordinary people in Wuhan who are trapped in the beginnings of the Covid-19 crisis. It features a group of directors – Zhou Nan, Zhang Chi, Tian Yusheng, Dong Yue, and Rao Xiaozhi – and a cast of actors led by Zhou Dongyu, Yin Fang and Huang Xiaong.

Chinese youth drama “One Week Friends” managed to gross $1.2 million in its third weekend, giving it a total of $16 million. In fifth place was Japanese animation “Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021,” which took in 5.3 million yuan ($800,000) over the weekend and increased its cumulative value to 90.1 million yuan ($13.4 million) since its launch on May 28. 2022.

The nationwide box office grossed $60.9 million over the weekend, up from $50.4 million in the previous frame. This gives a total for the year to date of $2.63 million, still more than 36% behind the same point in 2021.

The gains partly reflect improvements in the COVID situation in Beijing and Shanghai in recent days. But over the weekend, new case numbers flared up again, particularly in Anhui province, making predictions difficult.
