British Independent Film Awards Acting categories become gender neutral

The British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) have made all acting awards gender-neutral this year.

In the 25th year of BIFA, the Best Actress and Supporting Actor awards have traditionally been replaced by Best Leading Performance, Best Supporting Performance, Best Joint Lead Performance – in two (or exceptionally three) shows that are the film’s combined focus – and Best Ensemble. The BIFA Outstanding Performance Award, sponsored by Netflix, remains unchanged. These changes in representation categories are permanent.

In addition, BIFA is adding a new Director category – Best Debut Director, Feature Documentary. The Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director, sponsored by BBC Film, will now be for fictional features only. The Best Music Award, which previously recognized both original composition and music supervision, will be divided into Best Original Music and Best Music Supervision.

BIFA directors Amy Justin and Dina Wallace said: “We are very excited to be able to launch new expanded BIFA Awards categories which will fully capture the exceptional range of performances and acting talent in British independent film and allow us to celebrate even more talent than ever before.”

The 2022 nominations will be announced on November 3 and the ceremony will take place on December 4.
