It’s bad news for viewers, as Netflix has confirmed that three of its most rewatchable TV shows are set to leave the platform at the end of the month. In an even bigger blow to the streaming service, these shows will continue to appear on rival streaming device Peacock.
On August 1, Netflix will remove Friday Night Lights from its library. The popular sports drama follows a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas. The cast was led by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, and ran for 76 episodes over five seasons between 2006 and 2011. Its removal was surprising given that it was only added to US Netflix last year.
On the same date, 30 Rock will leave Netflix. This satirical sitcom was the brainchild of Tina Fey and its play was seen by Liz Lemon, the lead writer of the popular Sketch TV show. The beloved comedy starring Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrair. Its run of 139 episodes and seven seasons has been available on Netflix since August 2021.
Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time 30 Rock has been removed from Netflix. The show was originally available to stream between 2014 and 2017, before dropping from the Netflix library so much to the disappointment of subscribers. His comeback was celebrated last year, especially since the show is a favorite relaxed watch for many, but his second stint on the streaming service proved to be too short. Will you come back a third time in the future?
There’s also bad news for UK Netflix subscribers as Parks and Recreation will leave Netflix’s international libraries on August 1. This cliched comedy series stars Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope, an enthusiastic deputy director of the Parks Department in Pawnee, Indiana. This was another short-lived mission, Parks and Entertainment only being added to Netflix UK in February 2021, but it has now been confirmed that all 126 episodes will be leaving in just weeks.
It’s no coincidence that all three of these TV shows were produced by NBCUniversal, the same company that owns and operates Peacock. If you’ve been looking to access these beloved offers indefinitely, it might be worth paying for a Peacock subscription, or at least signing up for a free ad-supported account.
The loss of three well-known shows on the same date is a blow to Netflix, but it’s likely a turn of events the operator has been preparing for. Netflix’s ability to license third-party content has greatly diminished in the past few years, which is why the player is now investing heavily in original content.
However, many subscribers will still be frustrated by the loopholes in the service’s library when shows like 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, and Parks and Recreation departed. If you are a fan of these shows, you better enjoy them on Netflix as long as they last.
