Korea box office: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ grossed $10 million in opening weekend

Marvel’s latest movie “Thor: Love and Thunder” opened to the top of the South Korean box office with a convincing $10.0 million, accounting for half of cinema revenue across the country over the weekend.

“Thor” has played more than 2,000 screens according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. During its full five-day opening period, it raised $14.8 million.

The result was enough to overtake the “Top Gun Maverick” even though the latter was still aggressively revving and capturing 33% of the total market. Tom Cruise grossed $6.58 million in its third weekend at the Korean box office with a total of $38.5 million.

A game of strength by two American columns kept the weekend’s total score at $20.1 million, which is at the upper end of the range that the Korean box office has held steady since mid-May.

But the polarization is stark. Behind the first and second places, all other titles had to fight for the remaining sixth of the total.

Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave,” which seemed to disappoint high hopes, grossed $1.71 million in its second weekend. That was a 32% drop from its opening frame, and after 12 days in cinemas, it had raised $6.88 million.

The “round” continued to slow down. She earned $714,000 in fourth place, finally pushing her cumulative total over $100 million. Since May 18, it has earned $100.3 million selling 12.6 million tickets.

In fifth place, “The Witch: Part 2. The Other One” earned $461,000 for a total of $22.0 million.

The Chinese-made cartoon “Happy Little Submarine: Journey to the Center of Deep Ocean” was the second highest-grossing weekend show, grossing $302,000 over five days since its launch Wednesday.
