Box office: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ remains No. 1 in its second weekend

Thor: Love and Thunder is looking to dominate the box office again in its second weekend, fending off more mediocre editorials “Where the Visitors Sing” and “Paws of Fury: Hank’s Legend.”

While Marvel’s Thor fourquel has an easy path to staying in top this weekend, the superhero movie has been taking a major stumble since its opening. “Love and Thunder” added $13.8 million on its second Friday, down nearly 80% from its opening day. That’s a hair more powerful than Marvel’s latest “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (81% drop on Friday 2nd) and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (84% down), but it’s gotten much steeper on the studio side, Especially compared to the movie’s predecessor “Thor: Ragnarok,” which fell 60% on its second Friday.

Some industry forecasts have “Love and Thunder” net worth of $45 million in its second weekend, which falls short of freshman’s initial estimate north of $55 million.

Directed by “Ragnarok” Taika Waititi, the fourth solo installment in Thor Marvel’s Journey stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jimmy Alexander, Russell Crowe.

Sony’s “Where the Crawdads Sing,” an adaptation of the popular murder mystery novel, is expected to pull in $15 million to $16 million in its opening weekend after starting with $2.3 million in Thursday previews. It’s a big start to a female drama with a modest production budget of $24 million. On top of that, “Crawdads” is outperforming its original industry forecast, which had pegged the adaptation with its $10 million opening weekend. The movie is looking to open in third place.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine follows Kya, a North Carolina swampy outcast who finds herself at the center of a murder mystery. Critics were largely dismissive of the film, which has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 38% from top critics. but, diverseOwen Gleiberman praised Cordades, saying it is “a spot on mystery, a romance, a fantasy back-to-nature filled with luscious trees and hanging moss, and an example of women’s strength and independence in a world crushed by masculine will.”

Paramount’s movie “Paws of Rage: The Legend of Hank” doesn’t get much excitement. The mobile version debuts outside the top five with an expected opening of $6.2 million from 3,475 locations. The film faces stiff competition for family audiences from Marvel’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “Thor,” both of which are still popular versions of multiplexes.

The family-friendly film “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” is loosely based on the landmark 1974 comedy “Blazing Saddles” by Mel Brooks, and it trades cowboys for samurai and racial tensions versus the actions of dogs versus cats. The story follows the beagle, Voiced by Michael Cera, who became the sword-wielding protector of the city of Macarons. The film also includes the voices of Samuel L. Jackson, Ricky Gervais, Michelle Yeoh, and Brooks.

The original release date of “Paws of Fury” dates back to April 2017. Needless to say, it was a long way to go for the animated film, which was slated as a Sony production before moving to Open Road. Now, the film is being released by Paramount. It is easy to imagine that many stakeholders are comfortable with the turbulent production situation in the rearview mirror. And as CinemaScore’s “A-“, they seem to have at least left some smiles on people’s faces.

More is coming…
