The U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has decided to drop charges against members of the production team of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” who were arrested at the Capitol on June 16. The group was filming a clip from the movie Triumph the Insult Dog. for the talk show.
The decision to decline to prosecute the case was confirmed in a statement issued by the US Capitol Police on Monday.
“The United States Capitol Police are working with the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia on the June 16, 2022, illegal entry case involving a group of nine people associated with ‘The Late Show,'” the statement read. General for the District of Columbia refuses to sue the case. We respect the decision made by the office.”
The Capitol Police statement also notes that nine people were arrested for illegal entry after they were “told several times before entering the Capitol Buildings that they were to remain with staff guarded inside the buildings and failed to do so.”
CBS provided a statement immediately after the arrest to downplay the severity of the incident, stating that “staff interviews at the Capitol were approved and arranged in advance through congressional aides for the members interviewed.” CBS also clarified that the production team remained at the Capitol to film poses and other elements before the group’s arrest.
In the week following the accident, Colbert commented on the situation through his opening monologue on “The Late Show,” noting that everyone was “very professional” throughout the proceedings.
