Launched over a decade ago, Netflix is one of the most popular TV streaming services. It has evolved and tried to adapt to changing times – through different strategies and offerings. What started as a DVD rental platform now has its own catalog of original content, which it offers digitally. Despite this, Netflix recently started losing subscribers for the first time in over ten years. This could be due to several factors – such as viewers losing interest in the content it produces, competitors launching their competing services, etc. Netflix partially blames password sharing for this drop in subscribers. Since then, new strategies have been devised to combat this depression.
Over the past 15 years, we’ve worked hard to create a streaming service that’s easy to use, including for people who travel or live together. It’s great that our members love Netflix movies and TV shows so much and want to share them more widely. But today’s widespread account sharing among families undermines our long-term ability to invest in and improve our services.
In its latest attempt to increase revenue streams, Netflix will start charging select users extra fees for sharing their passwords. Starting next month, subscribers in Argentina, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras will have to pay an extra $2.99 per month to add a new family. The number of homes a user can add to their account varies – depending on which plan they are paying for.
Earlier this year, the company tested Add an additional member Paid feature in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. This add-on is exactly the same – it pushes users to pay more when they share their account passwords with friends. Those who don’t want to pay the additional participation fee can simply ask their friends to switch to paid standalone accounts. It is not yet clear whether this strategy will increase Netflix’s revenue or entice users to resort to piracy instead.
