Wes Anderson ‘Asteroid City’ plot details, focus features to release

“Asteroid City,” Wes Anderson’s next star-studded drama, will be released by Focus Features.

This release brings the director back together again with the studio that released his new 2012 story “Moonrise Kingdom,” which was nominated for an Academy Award for its original screenplay. Searchlight has released Anderson’s last three films: 2014’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” 2018’s “Isle of Dogs” and 2021’s “The French Dispatch.”

Universal Pictures, the parent company of Focus Features, will handle the international distribution of the new film.

In addition to directing, Anderson wrote the story with Roman Coppola. In describing the newly unveiled plot, “Asteroid City” is described as “a poetic meditation on the meaning of life.” Set in a fictional American desert city circa 1955 and the Junior Stargazer Convention, the film brings together students and parents from all over the country for science competition, rest and recreation, comedy, drama, romance, and more.

The star-studded cast includes Tom Hanks and Margot Robbie in Anderson’s film debut, as well as Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Robert Friend and Maya Hook, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chao, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Grace Edwards, Aristo Meehan, Sophia Lillis, Ethan Lee, Jeff Goldblum, and Rita Wilson.

“We are thrilled to be the global home of Asteroid City, and to refocus once again in business with Wes and its producing partners,” said Peter Kojawski, President of Focus Features. “Wes is a generational talent whose films delight audiences around the world; we are sure that combining his incredibly emotional story and vision along with the insanely talented cast of actors he has brought together, will mean Asteroid City will be no different.”

“Asteroid City” was produced by Anderson and longtime collaborators Stephen Rallis, founder of production company Indian Paintbrush, and Jeremy Dawson.

Anderson’s other famous works include “The Royal Tenenbaums”, “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “The Darjeeling Unlimited”. He is represented by UTA and Jackoway Tyerman.
