YouTube Music update brings media controls UI support in Android 13

Google has started rolling out an update to the YouTube Music app for some users. The update (v5.16) targets API level 33, i.e. Android 13, and provides support for the updated media controls that Google introduced with Android 13 DP2 earlier this year. However, the updated media control YouTube Music user interface comes with some screen changes.

As you can see in the attached screenshots (via 9to5Google), the updated media controls YouTube Music UI featuring background cover art, along with themed buttons based on colors extracted from the cover art. It includes a YouTube Music icon tucked away in the upper left corner, with the song and album name listed in the lower right. In the top left corner, you’ll find the output picker with a big play/pause button right below it.

There is a new animated progress bar at the bottom, flanked by the forward and back buttons. Finally, you will find the shuffle and repeat buttons in the lower right corner. Interestingly, the updated user interface does not have a like/dislike button, although it was available in previous versions. For reference, we have attached screenshots of the media controls in Android 12 and Android 13 DP2 below.

As mentioned earlier, YouTube Music version 5.16 is currently only available for a small number of users. It hasn’t been released widely through the Play Store, but it should be making its way to more users over the coming days.

It won’t be long before Google updates the rest of its apps for the upcoming Android 13 release. The company has already implanted the final beta for the Pixel range, and the first stable build should be around the corner.

What do you think of the updated user interface for YouTube Music media control? Is it an improvement compared to those in Android 12 devices? Let us know in the comments section below.
