George Clooney, U2, Gladys Knight receive honors from the Kennedy Center

Actor and director George Clooney, seven-time Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight, best-selling rock band U2, contemporary Christian singer Amy Grant, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tanya Lyon will receive honors from the Kennedy Center this year.

The five winners for their lifetime artistic accomplishments will be honored at the 45th Annual Gala, which will be broadcast during the 2022-2023 season on CBS (which has aired the special since its inception 45 years ago) and live on Paramount+.

Done + Dusted, Mark Twain Award producers from the center, will serve as executive producer for the event, which usually takes place during the first weekend of December at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.

“Whether saving humanity, orchestrating a robbery or piloting a ship in dangerous seas, actor George Clooney’s unique brand of earnest charisma and full embodiment of personality has led us to root for him every time,” said David M. Rubinstein, President of the Kennedy Center. “Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Amy Grant became the first artist to put contemporary Christian music at the forefront of American culture, then blossomed just as much after transitioning into mainstream pop with hit after hit, and today she is respected as the ‘Queen of Christian Pop.'”

He continued, “In her music career spanning 55 years, legendary singer and beloved singer of America “Empress of Soul” Gladys Knight has gone from Pips of Georgia to the Grammy Royal, showcasing a limitless vocal range and soul that has stood the test of time; Tania Lyon, refugee A young Cuban Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and ambassador of music, U2 has blessed America for more than five decades with their stunning original compositions and continues to have a major influence on classical music; and one of the most influential rock bands of the modern rock era, U2 has long won America and the world with its famous anthems. Her powerful lyrics and powerful messages of social justice and global citizenship – she has earned a musical legacy that transcends generations, inspires and unites.”

Last year’s honorees are Joni Mitchell, Bette Midler, Berry Gordy, Lorne Michaels and Justino Diaz.
