How to use voice chat with your friends on Discord on Xbox

Xbox and Discord are combined to provide one of the most highly desired features for console gamers. Discord Voice Chat can now be used in conjunction with Xbox Party Chat on Xbox One, Series S, and Series X. Initially, the feature is rolling out to Xbox Insiders in phases, before becoming available to everyone in a future update.

This is another major development and rip on Microsoft’s belt as it strives to bring gaming harmony to life across platforms through Xbox. With so many cross-play support titles now available, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone, it will be easier than ever to chat with your friends who don’t have an Xbox console.

But before you can use it, you first have to set it up. And frankly, it’s not the smartest process. That’s all you need to know.

what do you need

Discord on Xbox

The first thing you need, at least for now, is an invitation to try out the feature. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll see a message in the messaging tab that says “Try Discord Voice on Xbox today!”

Other things you will need to make sure you have the Discord and Xbox apps for either Android or iOS and they will need to be on the same device. So go ahead and download them, log into both, and then you’re ready to go. Also, make sure your Xbox console is linked to the Xbox mobile app. Ultimately, it seems that the desktop Discord app should also be able to do this, but for now, you have to use a phone or tablet.

As a side note, if you previously linked your Discord account to your Xbox account, you will first need to disconnect that connection. The old link simply allowed rich presence information in your Discord profile and you can’t use Discord Voice with it. To do this head in Settingsand then links, Remove the Xbox connection by pressing X.

How to set up and use Discord Voice on Xbox

The first step is to open the Xbox guide again and select “Try Discord Voice on Xbox today!” message. This will open a popup with a QR code inside. From there, follow these steps.

  1. open the Discord app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Click on a file personal picture.
  3. Choose Scan QR Code.
  4. Scan the QR code displayed on your Xbox console.
  5. You will now see a message that Discord is now on Xbox. Choose start up.
  6. Follow the prompts to sign in and authorize your Xbox account.

This completes the first part of the setup, but don’t put your phone aside just yet.

How to join the Discord Voice channel on your Xbox

This is where the process gets a bit messy. To actually join an audio channel or connect on your Xbox console, you really need to use the Discord mobile app now. But not only that, you need to use the Xbox app in conjunction with the Discord app. Timid?

Basically, you join Discord Voice on your phone, then go to the Xbox app which then transmits the audio to your console. This is why it’s a good idea to download the Xbox app, sign in, and actually link your console.

The process should go as follows:

  1. Join an audio channel or call in the Discord app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Swipe up to open the menu.
  3. select file Join the Xbox beta button.
  4. You will now be sent to the Xbox app.
  5. Select the option to link your Discord account.
  6. Follow the prompts to sign in and link your Discord account to the Xbox app.
  7. Choose the console you want to send audio to and select it audio transmission.

Now you can finally go to your Xbox console and you’ll be inside Discord Voice. The audio controls are similar to Xbox Party Chat, with Discord’s Deafen thrown into the mix. You also have the option to switch to the game’s chat at any time, as well as use a Discord overlay so you can see who’s talking at any time.

To close just hit Disconnect In the audio settings you will remove yourself from Discord Voice.

So, the process is a little complicated at the moment, but it works and once it’s set up initially, it’s a little faster for later uses. In Discord, I hit a file Move to Xbox button within the voice call or channel and skips directly to the console selection pane. Hopefully the process will be tightened up a bit before it’s fully rolled out, including being able to use desktop apps as well.
