Knop Alt-Rock T-Shirts: What’s Going On With Jesus Lizard, Wipers?

Even in a fast-paced movie like Jordan Peele’s “No”, there are some Easter eggs you just can’t ignore – and what caught more than a few viewers’ attention is the odd majority of the T-shirt-wearing characters appearing – rock bands from the late ’80s and early ’90s .

It starts with Angel wearing the Wipers shirt – the legendary Portland band beloved by Kurt Cobain. Then you see one bearing the Mr. Bungle – Faith No More was originally a Californian group Oddball, which he pursued as a parallel career. And by the time you see Emerald prominently wearing a Jesus Lizard T-shirt and OJ wearing a Rage Against the Machine one — and then, for a brief moment, the Butthole Surfers shirt flashes — he’s like, ‘Okay, this isn’t an everyday Nirvana T-shirt. What Hell Is with all those early ’90s alternative rock shirts in this movie? “

Ostensibly, if we quote a song by another band of the same general era, it makes absolutely no sense. Emerald wears Prince’s T-shirt early in the movie, and most of the recordings in their house seem to be old soul and pop, like Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By” version that came out early in the movie (well, except for the slowed-down ’80s Corey Hart song debut titled “Sunglasses at Night”).

But of course, it’s no coincidence diverse He met with the film’s costume designer, Alex Bouverd, to explain it.

“We’ve been struggling with a wardrobe to match Angel’s random career, and we’ve had that kind of happy outfit, and the actor is naturally optimistic. So we were trying to find a way to actually make him more like depression, and make his outfits more bleak. So [the directors] They were like, “Oh, he’s kind of standing in front of a prom, or rocking out with earplugs.” We said, “Okay, let’s put him in the band’s shirts—what kind of music is he listening to?” Well, (laughs), Jordan, [producer] Ian [Cooper] And I’m all exactly the same age and listen to that music and go to those concerts. Some were from Jordan’s suggestions, some were mine. Poor Brandon [Dalo, on the music team]We actually created a playlist of those bands because he’s probably heard of Rage Against the Machine, but hardly! “

And while that doesn’t answer why the OJ and Emerald characters also wear shirts, after the disasters at Haywood ranch, they regroup at Angel’s apartment and borrow some of his clothes.

She says, “You don’t see them changing their clothes, but that’s the implication, because they got wet. It’s been a while, and they’ve all been stoned. By the time they get to the café, OJ is wearing a Rage shirt and it’s kind of a tipping point, where they get really excited, ‘We’ll do’ This thing!” So I wanted to be very, like, [kind of growls]And so Jordan went for it.”

She also says there’s “kind of Nirvana-like thread to this,” noting that the shirt featuring the band’s most obscure, instrumental duo led by Dylan Carlson, Kurt Cobain’s boyfriend, nearly made it into the film. “Earth is the band started by best friend Kurt Cobain, and Kurt loved the band Wipers and Jesus Lizard.” (In fact, Nirvana and Jesus Lizard released a separate song together in 1992.)

She says the shirts also reflect a minor plot point that didn’t appear in the movie. At one point, they had to discuss Angel how much money he paid for the shirts, – it would have been a personal point, Emerald would have said ‘How much did you pay for that on eBay?’ ‘And she was going to steal it, because she’s some kind of magpie, you know?

“But,” she sighs, nodding to the occupational hazard of film costume design, “we always build these stories into clothes that no one ever knows!”
