Korea Box Office: ‘Alienoid’ Beats ‘Minions’ as ‘Thor’ Crumbles

Re-release titles “Alienoid” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” dominated acts at the South Korean box office over the weekend.

“Alienoid,” a sci-fi thriller about the hunt for a legendary sword across different eras, kicked off Wednesday and is constantly outpacing its animated rival.

“Alienoid” earned $5.19 million between Friday and Sunday for 32% of the market share, having played on more than 1,800 screens. Within five days of its release, it raised $7.37 million.

“Minions” earned $4.58 million between Friday and Sunday, for 29% of the market share, having played on nearly 1,400 screens. Its five-day total is $6.29 million.

Top Gun Maverick, which rebounded last weekend to the top of the chart, dropped to third place. At the end of its fifth week of release, it was down 34% to $3.68 million and 23% market share. Since its release on June 22, “Top Gun Maverick” has raised $53.0 million, making it the second highest-grossing film of the year to date and the highest-grossing title in Hollywood.

The nationwide box office gross over the weekend was $16.1 million. That was in line with the new standard that had been in place since the beginning of May, when COVID restrictions were largely lifted in Korea.

Park Chan-wook’s suspense art thriller “Decision to Leave” grossed $1.14 million over the weekend and took fourth place. And that compared to $1.73 million and third place a week ago. Four weeks after its release, the Cannes contest title has raised $11.8 million.

The movie “Thor: Love and Thunder” fell from second to fifth place. It earned $593,000 in the third weekend of its launch in Korea, a massive 82% drop in the previous weekend. Since July 6, it has accumulated $22.2 million.

The bottom places belong to: “Detective Conan: The Halloween Bride” with a total of $509,000 for 12 days of $2.75 million; “The Roundup”, $74,000 to a cumulative $100 million in 2022;
“Elvis” for $56,000 for a total of $632,000 for 12 days; and the new Japanese release It’s a Summer Movie, which has earned $44,000 over the weekend and $81,000 over the five days since its debut Wednesday.

A nine-screen preview of “Hansal: Rising Dragon” brought in $33,000. The time period drama will open wide on Wednesday.
