How to Manually Download Nothing OS OTA Updates on Nothing Phone 1

Nothing Phone 1 is finally here, with a lightweight Android skin called Nothing OS. You might not get some of the secret first-party sauce that Google Pixels get, but the user interface is an amazing vanilla experience enriched with a subtle touch of Nothing’s ubiquitous design language. However, the software has not been without problems and nothing is well aware of this fact. The company periodically rolls out nil updates to the operating system to squash bugs and introduce new features.

There are times when you may want to manually install a software update before it arrives over the air. Don’t worry, we will show you how to sideload the Nothing OS OTA update on Nothing Phone 1. This is not a very difficult process, but if not followed properly, You may have to completely wipe your device and start over.

How to Sideload None of OS OTA Updates on Nothing Phone 1

To start the sideloading process, first, you need to get the appropriate OTA update package for your device variant. To do this, check our Nothing Phone 1 Update Tracker and download the ZIP file corresponding to the version of Nothing OS you want to install.

For each version of Nothing OS, you should be able to find two types of OTA files: full and incremental. It is recommended to use full update packages for sideloading, as they upgrade the phone regardless of the previous version installed. It’s also useful when you’re rooted, as you can extract the stock boot image from it, patch it, and then flash it afterwards to maintain root access. An incremental update package is relatively smaller than the corresponding full OTA package, but can only be applied to a healthy base.

This manual installation process will not wipe your device, but it is a good practice to backup any irreplaceable data in case something goes wrong.

Package validation

Before trying to install Nothing OS update manually, you should check the SHA-1 hash of the downloaded package. In this case, the SHA-1 checksum of the recovery ZIP must be exactly the same as the file name (except for the *.zip extension). Even a difference of one letter is enough to indicate a file has been tampered with. This is how you can detect a corrupted download.

Android comes with a CLI tool called sha1sum Calculates the SHA-1 checksum. You can use it to check the hash of an OTA file.

• After downloading the OTA package to your phone, connect the device to your computer. Make sure you have the latest ADB binary installed on your PC/Mac/Chromebook.
• Verify that the phone can be detected using ADB.
• Open a shell window via ADB, navigate to the directory where you downloaded the package (usually /sdcard/Downloads), and run the following command:

  sha1sum <name of the OTA file>

• This long string at the beginning of the output text is a SHA-1 hash and must match the name of the OTA file.

Install via recovery

Nothing Phone 1 comes with a Google Pixel-esque recovery mode. As a result, you can easily download update packages through the recovery interface.

1. Download the ZIP update file to your PC/Mac/Chromebook.
2. Make sure Nothing Phone 1 can be detected by ADB from your PC.
3. On your computer, run the command:

   adb reboot recovery

4. You should see “No command” on your phone screen. Now press and hold the power button on your phone. While holding the Power button, press the Volume Up button and quickly let go of both buttons. You should list Android recovery.
   
5. On your phone, select File Update application from ADB Selection.
6. On your computer, run the command:

   adb devices

   This should return the device’s serial number with “Sideloading” next to its name, to indicate that your device is connected to the computer in sideload mode.

7. On your computer, run the command:

   adb sideload "filename".zip

   where “filename” is replaced with the full path, followed by the name of the file downloaded in step 1.

8. The update must be installed on your phone. Once the installation is complete, choose “Reboot system now” on your phone to reboot into the new build.

Installation via the Local System Update wizard

No operating system comes with a built-in system update installer, but the company has not yet offered it as a user-accessible option. However, you can play it using a custom dialer code or through any activity launcher app.

1. Create a folder named “ota” (without the quotes) in the root of your phone’s internal storage. Then copy the zip update file to this folder.

   • You can also use the activity launcher app to locate and execute the “OfflineOTAUpgrade” tool. The name of the tool package is com.nothing.OfflineOTAUpgradeApp.
     
3. The wizard will attempt to locate and install any valid OTA file present in the internal storage. If it fails, it offers you to manually browse for the OTA package.

   
   

4. After selecting the OTA file, the wizard will apply the update and restart the device.

verification

A simple way to check if you followed all these steps correctly and sideload the OTA file correctly is to head to Settings > about the phone > Program information on Nothing Phone 1.

This should be on the Nothing OS version you sideloaded, indicating that you have successfully completed the installation process.
