Statement from ASLEF

in press releaseASLEF said union members are protesting after the train companies “failed to make a payment offer to keep pace with the increase in the cost of living”.

The union said it “did not want to strike” and “disturb passengers” but was “forced” by the current situation.

“But we have been forced by the rail companies to fill this position led by the Conservative government,” said Secretary General Mike Whelan. “Drivers at the companies where we have been on strike have had a real cut in wages for the past three years – since April 2019.”

And these companies give us nothing, saying that the government tied their hands. That means, in real terms, with inflation still at 9%, 10% and even 11% this year, depending on the indicator you’re using, they’re being asked to take real terms for a wage cut. This is not acceptable.

“A strike is the only option available now, but we are always open to talks if the train companies, or the government, want to talk to us and make a fair and reasonable offer.”
