Jonathan Lipnicki reveals why he stopped acting: ‘I wasn’t a good actor’

Jonathan Lipnicki was one of the most beloved child actors of the late ’90s and early 2000s thanks to his roles in the films ‘Jerry Maguire’, ‘Stewart Little’ and ‘Like Mike’, but his acting career appears to have vanished in 2010. In an interview new with /MovieThe 31-year-old actor has been honest about his acting absence. Lipnicki starred in short films and direct-to-DVD projects for a while in the early 2010s, but his career didn’t return to its highest levels in his child stardom days.

“The biggest transformation for me was…I haven’t worked for a long time,” Lipnicki said. “And people always frame that as, ‘Oh, I went to high school,’ and so on. And that’s the story people sometimes tell when they’re not working. Or if they’re child actors or whatever, they took a vacation. I took a vacation, Meaning it wasn’t my only priority. But I didn’t work because I didn’t work. I didn’t get any roles for a while.”

Lipnicki said that growing up and going to high school was not the main factor behind his quitting acting. Quite the contrary. Lipnicki loves acting and would never give it up, but he disappeared from the industry for years because he wasn’t a good enough actor to remain a household name.

“I am honest about it. It was because [I] Lipnicki said about why he didn’t work. “Because the great thing about being young, is that there’s a childlike wonder ingrained in it. And that’s why a lot of the kids you see are quite talented. And filters come in and you get nervous…or the world plays its part. And so, for me, I’ve moved on from just doing It’s natural to try to be like my favorite actors.”

To become a better actor, Lipnicki enrolled in acting classes after high school and began to study the craft seriously. He also started taking theater roles to test his acting chops. The actor cites being a cameo in Martin McDonagh’s production of “Lieutenant Inchmore” as a pivotal moment where he learned from star Chris Pine.

“I was able to see Chris in action, and I was able to see some great actors in that production,” Lipnicki said. “It was really inspiring… I never lasted because everyone was young and in good health. But I had to practice on this really tough material. So that was a formative experience in its own way.”
