Box Office: ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ earns $2.2 million in previews

“DC League of Super-Pets” kicked off $2.2 million in previews Thursday, as Warner Bros. superhero comic book looks. to dislodge Jordan Peele’s “Nope” from its spot at the top of the box office.

Over the weekend, “DC League of Super-Pets” aims to raise between $25 million and $30 million when it opens in 4,300 theaters in North America. That should be enough to beat No, the alien horror thriller, which was the number one movie when it debuted last weekend, grossing $41 million. However, Nope is expected to suffer a 60% drop in its second year, which will bring its volume to $15-16 million.

The initial results for “DC League of Super-Pets” compare favorably with other recent films aimed at family audiences. The animated movie “The Bad Guys” last spring earned $1.2 million in pre-opening previews of nearly $24 million, while “Jungle Cruise” raised $2.7 million in previews before raising $35 million in its opening weekend.

But films aimed at family audiences have often struggled during the pandemic era. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” has been a rare exception, earning $300 million domestically so far, but Paramount’s “Paws of Fury,” another summer entry in the genre, has only brought in $14 million domestically.

However, “DC League of Super Pets” does have a few things going that way. It is based on the DC Comics superhero team Legion of Super-Pets, so it has the brand’s fame. Additionally, it features the voices of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, who have collaborated in the past on the popular “Jumanji” films and the hit comedy “Central Intelligence.” Their latest effort is very expensive, costing $90 million to produce, so it must appeal to audiences if it is to turn a profit.
