Ricky Joby Park, the character Stephen Yoon in Jordan Peele no, is a man who has…problems. He’s a successful showman and runs what appears to be a lucrative business in the tourist trap of Jupiter’s Claim (which is now a very real attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood), but he’s also a man with a traumatic past that includes a career as a child actor and a violent animal attack on set. Ostensibly, he’s a guy who always seems to have a smile on his face, but he has a deep inner complexity – and this was very much something the actor enjoyed exploring, collaborating with the film’s writer/director and via independent research.
I interviewed Stephen Yun earlier this month during Press Day in Los Angeles for no, and opened our conversation by researching the psychology of the character. He touched on the topic of trauma at a young age and how it can shape your personality as an adult, and noted that it’s something we hear a lot about when it comes to “child stardom,” but it’s also something that’s part of everyday life. happy yun,
Jordan [Peele] Really open the door to collaboration. There was an idea of who Jupe was on the page and then we really talked about it and switched a few things and changed some background stuff and really motivated him. I guess to me, what’s most interesting is that in the end, I feel like Jupe is in all of us, you know? What does trauma do in your life? What does it do to tell you who you are at a young age? And it might be in child stardom, but it’s kind of in all of us. So I thought about it a lot.
When Ricky ‘Jupe’ Park was a kid, he had big roles in many shows, but the most famous was the sitcom named Jordi’s house. The series starred Jupe opposite a real chimpanzee, and was quickly canceled when the animal co-star broke out during production and brutally attacked top actors and filmmakers. Jupe seems to protect himself from the events by acting as if it was a major cultural moment he was a part of, and he has his own secret museum with props from the collection. He treats his trauma as a spectacle, even describing it to Daniel Kaluuya’s OJ and Keke Palmer’s Emerald through the lens of an old man. Hollywood’s famous treatment of child stars generally fits what is said in horror and sci-fi, and Stephen Yeun noted that there were documentaries on the topic that came out by chance while he was researching the role. The material seemed to be part of the fabric, so to speak, but the actor was apparently more involved in the existential questions the character presented him:
It was interesting; When we were making the movie, he was making a lot of documentaries about that. And obviously, there are storied jobs that we all know about. I think for me what I wanted to focus the most on was the way we shape ourselves. like who are we? Are we who we want to be? Or do we kind of like the sum total of other people’s expectations of us? And what does that do to your life and what does it do to your motives and who you are in the end? So, yeah, it was a very existential and isolated exercise.
It’s great material that will surely grow even more awesome with more views and more anatomy.
