Chinese box office: ‘Moon Man’ opens

The sci-fi comedy “Moon Man” topped $130 million this weekend and helped the Chinese box office escape the allure.

Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway showed that the film recorded a three-day gross of CNY873 million ($130 million) and made up the entirety of 90% of the weekend’s theatrical turnover nationwide.

Moon Man tells the story of “the last man in the universe” as an astronaut finds himself stuck on the moon’s surface after an asteroid wipes out life on Earth.

Directed by Zhang Chiyu, who previously directed the 2017 sports comedy “Never Say Die”.

It was produced by Mahua FunAge, a continuously successful comedy production company with credits including “Hello Mrs Money” and Goodby Mr Loser, along with Alibaba Pictures.

– More to keep track of.
