Locarno Int’l Festival Entry ‘Rule 34’ Bows Trailer

Brazilian director Julia Murad’s provocative drama “Rule 34” (“Regra 34”) has shared its trailer exclusively with diverse Before her bow at the Locarno Film Festival.

If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie will have the filmmakers behind the “50 Shades of Grey” blush. “Rule 34” competes in the official section of the Swiss festival which publishes the following disclaimer on its website: “This film presents scenes that may shock some viewers.”

As described in Urban Dictionary, Rule 34 refers to “the 34th Rule of the Internet, which states that any imaginable media object, character, or privilege has a pornographic relationship with it.”

“Rule 34” is about 23-year-old Simon (played by Sol Miranda) who studies criminal law and advocates for women’s rights. By day she studies law and martial arts. At night she performs her role in front of a live sex cam in exchange for coins. One night, while watching a BDSM movie online, I was startled by the expression of fear and ecstasy on the girl’s face. This awakens her dark impulses for a more dangerous means of sexual gratification.

The trailer begins with Simone laughing and gasping as her friend strangles her with a belt followed by scenes from her double life: teasing her online viewers at night and attending law classes during the day.

Produced by Murat’s Esquina Films, the Rio de Janeiro-based Bubbles Project and France’s Still Moving, “Rule 34” has received support from the Swedish Göteborg Audiovisual Fund as part of its government initiative to defend democracy around the world where it believes culture is at risk. The Bolsonaro government’s curtailment of Brazilian audiovisual incentives in recent years has certainly made “Rule 34” a strong contender for the fund, which offered 35,000 yen (about 215,000 R$) for the film.

Base 34, also backed by Visions SudEst, passed through Italy’s Turin Film Lab and Berlinale Production Market.

The cast is led by Miranda, Lucas Andrade, Lorena Comparato, and Isabella Mariotto.

Murat, who also wrote the script, worked as a producer alongside Tatiana Light of the Bubbles Project. Sao Paulo-based Imovision owns the Brazilian distribution rights.

Rule 34 is Murat’s third film. She has worked in various fields in the world of filmmaking and has produced documents as well as feature films. Her first feature film, “Historias que soesentem quando lembradas”, which premiered in Venice, was selected by San Sebastian, Toronto, Rotterdam, New Director New Films, and won 36 international awards, including Best Film in Abu Dhabi. , Sophia and Lima. Her second film, “Pendular,” won two Fipresci Awards: in the 67The tenth The Berlinale and the 35th Uruguayan Film Festival.

The Locarno Film Festival runs from August 3-13.
