Flash operation is coming to an end. The CW announced that the show will end with season nine, which has been shortened to 13 episodes. It will air in 2023 as part of The CW’s mid-season lineup. It looks like Flash will be the last major Arrowverse show, so this ends the DC super franchise.
Flash debuted in 2014, the second show for the Arrowverse after Arrow. It stars Grant Gustin as crime scene detective Barry Allen, who gains super speed after getting into an accident at STAR Labs. Wearing a mask and a red suit, Barry fights criminals and other lawmen with the help of a trusted team.
Coincidentally, the series’ final episode will likely premiere shortly before the scheduled release of The Flash starring Ezra Miller on June 23, 2023 – although the film’s fate remains somewhat in doubt due to Miller’s off-screen controversy. TV show and movie have nothing to do with each other.
The Flash is one of The CW’s biggest successes, continuing to make strong showings even in later years. Season 8 was the network’s most-watched show from 2021 to 2022, averaging over one million viewers, and ranked among the most streamed shows on its digital platforms.
The ending was no surprise, as rumors were circulating that Season 8 would be the last. Then, The CW released a renewal after signing deals with Gustin and co-stars Candice Patton and Danielle Panabaker.

The Flash is the most successful and longest-running series of the Arrowverse series, even surpassing the OG stock (which ended after eight seasons). Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning followed, all of which ended.
Unless the CW orders a new show, this appears to be the heyday for the Arrowverse stock. The network’s only remaining DC series are Superman & Lois (set in an alternate universe) and the upcoming Gotham Knights, about Bruce Wayne’s adopted son and the children of Batman’s enemies.
This spring, the network canceled several series and announced plans to liquidate others, including Riverdale, before being purchased by local station group Nexstar.
