James Franco plays Cuban Fidel Castro in new movie

James Franco was cast as Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro in the independent film Alina Cuba, diverse Made sure on.

Franco joins previously announced Anna Villavini, who portrays the character of Alina Fernandez, Castro’s daughter. Additionally, Mia Maestro also joined the cast as the mother of Alina Natalia Revuelta, a Cuban socialite whom she gave birth to after an affair with Castro. The film will follow Alina’s life as Castro’s illegitimate daughter and a critic of his rule in Cuba before he left the country and defected to Spain in 1993. Franco’s casting comes less than a month after it was announced that the actor would appear in the post-war drama “I, You” by British director Billy August. The films mark Franco’s return after a 2019 lawsuit was filed against the actor alleging that he sexually abused young women who took an acting class. The lawsuit was settled last year. “Alina from Cuba” directed by Miguel Bardem, based on a screenplay by Jose Rivera and Nilo Cruz. The film is scheduled to begin production on August 15, with its crew filming in Colombia. The film’s supporting actors include Alanna de la Rosa, Maria Cecilia Botero, Harding Junior, Sian Chiong and Rafael Ernesto Hernandez. John Martinez O’Phelan and Joe Lamy produced for Mankind Entertainment, while Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler produced for Maven Screen Media, and Allen Gilmer and Rikki Rushing for Redbud Studios. Executive producers include Javier Gonzalez, Juan Pablo Solano, Simone Beltran, Luis Manduki and Thaddeus Matola.

In addition to “Alina Cuba,” O’Phelan is also producing an accompanying documentary, “Daughter of the Revolution,” directed by Thaddeus D. Matola.
