I can’t stop playing Fall Guys, and that’s partly because I (arguably) what’s wrong with games today. Back when Fall Guys went down two years ago and became an overnight success due to their crazy races, I couldn’t get enough. But I finally quit.
However, in a moment of boredom waiting for an early flight that was late (and delayed again), I knew I had to give Fall Guys a second chance. And then, don’t you know, I’m sitting here a week later talking about how addictive this game is.
Fall Guys, for starters, is a competitive online platform game where you and up to 59 other competitors try to survive an obstacle course. Sometimes it’s a race, sometimes it’s a puzzle that you have to survive. But no matter what you play, you’ll be competing in a neon-filled environment where your fellow Fall Guys are chubby little creatures (unlike Minions) with tiny eyes.
Fall Guys, available at converts (Opens in a new tab)And the X-Box (Opens in a new tab)And the PS4 / PS5 (Opens in a new tab) and PC via Epic Games Store (Opens in a new tab)Released for free in June. But I was playing long before that.
I bet you’re wondering what really brought me back? Well, dear reader, I am not interested in makeup, but this is a story that begins with cosmetics.
Fall Guys got skin that makes me smile
One morning last week, as I was sitting at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, I learned that my flight had been delayed. And at that moment I remembered a story I saw on the Internet. Austin Creed, who went along with Xavier Woods/King Woods when he was in the ring at WWE Friday Night SmackDown, was joining Fall Guys as a cosmetic skin, available for purchase as downloadable content. Yes, that’s what I meant when I said what’s wrong with games. To swing this by the looks of a character, in a game that I know is fun and good? I feel ashamed.
Since winning his last King of the Arena tournament, Woods’ skin will have his own crown – the artifact that you run to grab and win in Fall Guys. (WWE fellow wrestlers Asuka and Undertaker are also available for purchase.) So I turned on my Nintendo Switch, dropped cash to be able to play Fall Guys like King Woods – and Asuka too, but my luck was better like Woods), pulled out a Switch Pro console I took my bag out of my bag and started working.
And that’s when LaGuardia’s Wi-Fi really impressed me. Not only was I able to download the latest game update seamlessly over the free Wi-Fi at the airport, but I was actually able to play on the server using the same wireless connection. I wasn’t expecting any of this to work, from downloading the update to playing actual games.
Once I found a corner of the airport where I could play Fall Guys in peace – the gate I had been waiting for almost had its own version of Fall Guys with confused young and old kids running left and right – I dived down and almost lost track of time. Over twenty Fall Guys games have been played at that gate. At some point, I realized I was too overwhelmed with my mission to win Fall Guys, so I had to set an alarm to remind me when I needed to leave for my gate.
And when that alarm rang, I didn’t win a tour. But I still had a lot of fun.
Fall Guys is an addiction I’m trying to control
I would have played Fall Guys on the plane if I could, but JetBlue failed to provide functional Wi-Fi during the flight. The second time I checked into Airbnb, I was so desperate to win a round that I put all my thoughts into going out for a local flavor (I was in Nashville and hungry for Prince’s hot chicken). I had to win, right? Especially in the comfort of Airbnb, with a more stable Wi-Fi.
And yes, I did. On top of that, I did it in Fall Mountain, one of the final levels that I always find hard to beat. This level is a race where you have to get to the big floating crown at the end before everyone else and then time the jump well so you can grab that crown, which goes up and down.
I didn’t believe in my abilities in Fall Guy, and thought I’d have to play through several more rounds again, until I got the Hex-A-Gone, a round where you walk through hexagons that disappear when someone steps on them. But I won at Fall Mountain due to other players reaching the crown before me who failed to time their jumps correctly.
Outlook: Fall Guys got me hooked – again
Now that I’m home, Fall Guys has made its way back to my waking hours by being that game that you can play a bit more, if you so choose. So whether I’m tired of scrolling on Twitter (and yes, I’m so sick of it), waiting to leave for something else or simply tired of my streaming options, I’m back at Fall Guys again.
So, dear reader, if you’ve never tried Fall Guys, I hope I gave you a reason to check it out. And if you are already playing. Watch out for the player named “henrytcasey” wearing Xavier Woods leather. I’m more messy than I’m good at this game, and I’m good at it.
