BET+ buys South African sci-fi thriller ‘Pulse’ (exclusive)

BET+ has acquired the US broadcast rights to the South African survival thriller sci-fi thriller Pulse.

“Pulse” tells the explosive story of an electromagnetic pulse that disrupts a safe building and disrupts vital electrical signals in everyone’s minds, trapping a group of video game designers and turning every floor into a psychotic battlefield. The show questions whether modern humankind can truly survive without the technology that defines our way of life today.

The series was filmed in South Africa as well as Mauritius.

The 6×60 show was created by Hilton Trevis, the Academy Award-winning and BAFTA-winning visual effects team behind films like “Skyfall,” “Harry Potter,” “Fargo,” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” The team includes executive producer Steve Lanning, producers Jake Lanning, Ben Lanning and Bottego Matsek, writer Stephen R. Clark, and director and producer Salas de Jäger.

“Pulse” was produced by Media Musketeers, Forlan Film, Showmax, and The Mediapro Studio.

The cast includes Taryn Wengar (“Raised By Wolves”, “The Tree”), Thapelo Mokoena (“Trackers”, “Nothing For Mahala”), Carel Nel (“Raised By Wolves”, “Grant”), and Sven Ruygrok (” Spud, “Zulu”) and Earl Wan (“Just Mates”, “Supercapitalist”).

Amcomri Entertainment backed distributor Abacus Media Rights has sold the show to BET+.

The streaming service, much like its cable channel counterpart, features programming from black creators, owned and operated by Paramount Streaming and Tyler Perry Studios. SVOD recently revealed the slate of its first summer shows, including “Martin,” “Bid for Love,” and “I Love Us.”

“Pulse” debuted on South African-backed streaming service MultiChoice Showmax in May. It will be launched at BET+ on August 18th.
