Microsoft Edge 104 can import your Chrome data, even without Chrome

Microsoft released Edge browser version 104 in the stable channel, which means it is rolling out to the general public. This new version of Edge comes with a couple of important updates, not the least of which is the ability to import browser data from Google Chrome, even if you’ve never installed Chrome on your PC.

In fact, when you first launch Edge, it will now give you the option to sign in to your Google account. This allows Edge to retrieve browsing data from Chrome that’s synced to the cloud, making switching to Edge easier than ever. Microsoft is hard at work urging users to switch to its browser, and this new move appears to focus on getting users to stick to Edge when setting up a new PC, before they have the chance to look for the Chrome download link. Normally, browsers can import data from other browsers installed on the system, but this means that you should do your best to install a new one in the first place. Since Edge is built into Windows, this can help keep users away from Chrome.

The only noteworthy change has to do with the improved Security Mode, a feature that debuted with Edge 98 in February. This feature disables the timely collection of websites that have not been specifically identified as secure. This approach reduces the possibility of attacking dangerous websites, but it comes at the expense of compatibility, which is why your most visited sites are excluded and the feature is turned off by default.

With Edge 104, Microsoft is adding a new Basic level, on top of the existing Balanced and Strict levels of this feature. Basic mode only runs Enhanced Security Mode on less frequent websites, so you can still run the most popular online platforms normally and have an extra layer of protection for websites you rarely go to. By default, Enhanced Security Mode will still be turned off, but if you choose to enable it, you have the option to make it less aggressive.

As for where you can enable this feature, simply click the three dots menu in the upper-right corner of your browser window, and go to Settingsand then Privacy, search and services. Scroll down until you see Enhance your security on the web, then enable the feature. If you don’t see the new base level, you can check for updates in a file About Microsoft Edge section on the left side of the window.
