Neve Campbell shocked “Scream” fanbase when she announced on June 6 that she would not be returning for the upcoming sixth “Scream” movie, making her the first installment in the long-running horror franchise that won’t star Campbell. The actor said at the time that the offer to act in “Scream 6” doesn’t properly “equal” the value it brings to the franchise. “I didn’t feel like what was given to me was equivalent to the value I brought for this franchise, and I have brought it to this franchise for 25 years,” Campbell said. “And as a woman who works in this field, I think it’s really important to be appreciated and to strive for recognition.”
Campbell added, “I honestly can’t believe that if I were a man and did five of a massive mega-sequence over 25 years, the number I was shown would be the number the guy would be shown. And in my soul, I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t walk feeling it. Feeling undervalued and feeling unfair, or unfair, about it.”
The upcoming “Scream 6” will be directed again by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin of Radio Silence and Tyler Gillett, the duo that revived the franchise with the fifth installment. This movie, titled “Scream,” opened in January and grossed $140 million worldwide. Newcomers Gina Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmine Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding prepare to reprise their roles from the fifth film. Courteney Cox will also return as the mainstay of the franchise.
In her original statement, Campbell wrote that it was “difficult” to come out of the “Scream” franchise and added, “To all of my ‘Scream’ fans, I love you. You have always been incredibly supportive of me. I am forever grateful to you and what this privilege has given me. over the past 25 years.”

Paramount Pictures has set a March 31, 2023 release date for “Scream 6.”
