TLC’s ‘Sister Wives’ Season 17 (Precursor: Christine Divorces Kody Brown)

Then there were three.

In the new trailer for season 17 of TLC’s “Sister Wives,” Kristen Brown—the third woman to marry Cody Brown—announces that she’s leaving the family.

“I feel like Cody, is more important to Robin,” she says during the trailer, referring to Cody’s fourth wife, Robin Brown.

Elsewhere in the two-minute trailer, Cody’s first wife, Mary Brown, breaks down in tears, noting that Kristen was “more than just a sister-in-law,” because she’s also a friend. The couple will likely remain close since Cody and his four wives share 18 children in total.

“Sister Wives” has documented Cody’s polygamous relationship with Mary, Kristen, Robin and Janelle Brown since it premiered in 2010.

For the past two seasons, his relationship with all the wives has struggled amid the COVID-19 pandemic as they have all been forced to live separately for safety reasons. While his relationship with Merry has become non-existent – he shared during the fifteenth season that he doesn’t love her – the sixteenth season has hosted other issues, including between Cody and Janelle.

Then, during last season’s finale, Kristen stated that she would be ending their relationship after 25 years, explaining, “The intimate part of our marriage is over. To be honest, I’m not okay with it. I’m not okay with staying in a marriage where there is no intimacy This isn’t a real marriage. I’m not interested in a half marriage or a partial marriage or anything we have.”

In the new trailer, Cody appears to question the state of the family dynamic in general, stating in an interview, “The message we sent out to the world about functional polygamy seems pretty dysfunctional now.”

At the end of the video, he yells at Kristen in front of the group, saying, “You’ve never tried to have good relationships with these people, which is why I’m so angry…it’s just a knife in college, after all the years, the sacrifices I’ve made to love you.”

Season 17 of “Sister Wives” airs on TLC on September 11 at 10 p.m. ET.
