ACM Honors Returns to Broadcast TV with Fox Special in September

The Academy of Country Music’s annual “ACM Honors” special will air on Fox in September, bringing the show back on a major broadcast network for the first time in four years. The return to a major network comes, ironically, as its parent show, the ACM Awards, made the switch from broadcast television to being an Amazon Prime-exclusive video broadcast last spring.

“ACM Honors” will premiere on Fox on September 13 from 8-10 p.m. EST/PT. The special last appeared on prime-time television in 2017, when it was broadcast on CBS. Meanwhile, the show has been seen on cable and streaming networks, including CircleTV for its 2021 release.

The special will air about three weeks after taping at his old home, Ryman Hall in Nashville, on August 24.

One obvious reason Fox is taking on the special: It’s an opportunity to ramp up promotion of the network’s upcoming drama “Monarch,” starring Trace Adkins and Susan Sarandon, who bowed out two days earlier, 9/11. From “A Country Boy Can Survive” by Hank Williams Jr., which will also be included in “Monarch.”

The “ACM Honors” awards board-chosen awards and honor long-serving state bodies, as opposed to last year’s ACM Awards for Records that were voted on by entire Academy members.

As previously announced, among the honorees at the 2022 show is Morgan Wallen, who has delivered the most successful album of any genre in the past two years, despite causing controversy that saw it sanction box on television and radio for most of 2021. With the singer still making an appearance Limited on TV Despite his dominance of the commercial music scene, his reservation alone would ensure a certain level of viewership from a fan base that considers him the ruling monarch of the dominant state.

Shania Twain, Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton and the TV series “Yellowstone” were also honored with special awards.

Artists who will perform at ACM Honors include Whalen, Winona Goode, Kelsey Ballerini, Mickey Gayton, Dirks Bentley, Avril Lavigne, Brooks & Dunn, Dan + Shay, Vince Gill, Lenny Wilson, Little Big Town, Jordan Davis , Ernst, Jesse Frasier, Ashley Gurley and Hardy. More artists are expected to be announced in the lead up to registration.

“We are thrilled to bring one of the favorite and most moving nights of our industry back to prime-time television and to begin ACM’s first-ever partnership with Fox,” said Damon Whiteside, CEO of the Academy of Country Music. “Being our 15th annual show makes the return to television even more special and a great opportunity to bring ‘ACM Honors’ to fans to experience the admiration and respect of our country’s community through passionate acclaim and unique performances.”

Whiteside is the program executive producer for the Academy of Country Music, and Martin Fisher is the executive producer for Aubrey Entertainment. Ben Roy is co-executive producer, and Sasha Muller is the special producer. Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials for Fox Entertainment, joined Wednesday’s announcement.
