Playing football! A league of their own is advancing to the hitter box this week. The new series of the 1993 classic features all-new characters in a similar story about women playing baseball during World War II. But the new edition offers some major updates by also focusing on race and gender in the midst of the victor’s most popular journey for the underdog.
Set in the year 1943, the series chronicles the formation of American professional baseball in general. Carson (Abby Jacobson) is a hunter, like Gina Davis Dottie, who tries to join the Rockford Peaches while her husband is fighting in the war. Glamorous Greta has shades of Madonna’s Mae, but in a big departure, she and Carson develop a lot more chemistry between her teammates.
The other major change in the series is the focus on the black woman’s experience. Co-leader is Max (Chanté Adams), who is frustrated at being excluded from auditions because baseball has not yet been incorporated. She takes a job in a factory hoping to play for the men’s team, though she must juggle that with work at her mother’s hair salon.
