The Chainsaw Man team explains why their boss is perfect for the job

chainsaw manThis s anime is gearing up for its worldwide premiere later this year, and the team behind the adaptation explained why their choice of director was the perfect person for a job leading such a big project! The anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s original manga series is the most anticipated new anime of the year overall, and while this has already led to a lot of pressure, Studio MAPPA is also approaching the project in a much different way than expected. To move forward without traditional production committees and other standard procedures, there were a lot of questions about production.

openness about chainsaw manDuring a special conditioning session during Crunchyroll Expo earlier this summer (of which ComicBook.com was present), Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka and Producer Makoto Kimura talked about producing the series. One of the observations was that their choice of director Ryo Nakayama, and how he was the perfect choice for the job because they are a zealous, young creator a good fit for all the wild ideas of Fujimoto’s original manga series.

When asked what to expect from director Ryo Nakayama, Otsuka explained that the director was chosen not only because he was young and enthusiastic, but because his point of view also aligns with the world’s vision of original series creator Tatsuki Fujimoto to do the best justice for the series. Referring specifically to the latest trailer, Otsuka noted that Nakayama’s work can be seen through its originality in terms of how it captures the realistic, almost realism of the original Fujimoto movie. The director even went so far as to directly influence casting choices.

Otsuka and Kimura explained that Nakayama helped set the cast and wanted the characters to reflect the energy of the leads, and emphasize overall sound production. Given that the team also promised that there would be no shortage of violence and bloodshed seen from the original series, and given the response, it seems fans won’t have to worry about the future of the anime.
