The director’s ghost wants the film to be entirely in Japanese

Chad Stahelski, director of the upcoming movie Ghost of Tsushima stated in an exclusive interview with collider He intends to make the film as original to Japan as possible. This means that both the voice acting and actress choices will be from Japan, and he has Sony’s full support on that.

The director has a deep love for Japan, the people, the culture and the language. Ghost of Tsushima goes to great lengths to depict the historical island of Tsushima not only in a historical context, but also to show the life of the Japanese residents and what they really fought for. The sounds of the wind carried through the sakura trees, and cherry blossoms floated in the wind to create a wonderful landscape. Chad Stahelsky wants to push the story, which he considers immortal, beyond what famous director Akira Kurosawa has done in his touching films.

The director of Ghost of Tsushima says he is fond of silent films and how they convey emotions without words or language. He is very open about his love for them and believes that the success of late-era actors, such as Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Chan is due to their beautiful, voiceless determination. At that time, these actors did not have to speak a certain language for the viewer to understand, as all the emotions appeared on their faces, and the viewer could identify with them without any cultural or language barriers.

However, the director is aware of two things. First of all, no one will finance their movie or go to cinemas if the actors don’t speak English. The second is that he wants as many people as possible to understand the story of Ghost of Tsushima and enjoy the battles as much as possible, so he does not intend to copy and paste Japanese influences into his film, such as Haiku poems, but also recast it in a way that Western viewers love and adore. It’s a dangerous bet, but he believes he can do justice to the original story.

Speaking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Stahelski said, “I think if we do this right, it’s going to be visually stunning. She’s a driven character. She has a chance to do great work, great looks. And frankly, we’re going to try to do that, all in character. Meaning, it’s a Japanese thing. Relates to the Mongol conquest of Tsushima Island. Full Japanese cast, in Japanese.” Then go on to say how completely Sony agrees with the idea.

So it looks like Ghost of Tsushima will be a Japanese movie, but it will be made for everyone to enjoy. The game was able to play Japanese sounds, and even use Kurosawa’s filter for maximum immersion, but the movie won’t have these options, so there’s more of a burden to cater to everyone’s different tastes. Chad Stahelski is known as a stuntman in many movies, and also for his amazing work in the John Wick series. For a job that requires a lot of expressions and body language from the actors to convey a story from a different culture, he is definitely the right man for the job.
