Vince McMahon and the old WWE system reportedly “really sad” for Gunther

Gunther and Shinsuke Nakamura put on a great match during WWE SmackDown last night, so it’s odd to read a report that says the former WWE leadership “really strained” on the Ring General. That’s exactly what a new report from WrestleVotes says, and it apparently happened after Gunther appeared on the July 4th episode of Monday Night Raw. During that episode, Gunther took over R-Truth, dressed as Uncle Sam, after which it was reported that Vince McMahon and the leadership in charge “really grieved” for Gunther that a televised burial was planned.

WrestleVotes wrote the following on Twitter. “After he appeared on RAW on 7/4, those in power at the time were really annoying Gunther for any ridiculous reason. So much so that Burial was coming up on TV. Only a month later and totally the difference…”

Obviously that didn’t happen in the end, as since the change Gunther has remained on winning ways and the Intercontinental champions are still at SmackDown. Last night’s match against Nakamura was fantastic, and the match was not only the main event of last night’s episode but also a showcase for both Gunther and Nakamura, another superstar often not spotlighted during the previous era. .

It doesn’t look like Gunther is going anywhere soon, although we’ll have to wait and see what’s next in his Intercontinental Championship. After last night’s match, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a second match between Gunther and Nakamura at one point, although Ricochet and Gunther were also upset about the rematch at one point.

Other stars who might be in this title picture are Sheamus, Jinder Mahal, Madcap Moss, and Butch, especially if he ends up getting repacks as rumor has it. If he goes back to his original version, he might be a perfect pick to jump into the Intercontinental Championship scene, but then again, maybe he could just tweak Butch’s look and personality a bit while still challenging the title.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but what do you want to happen with Gunther next? Tell us in the comments or as always you can talk about all things wrestling with me on Twitter @MattAguilarCB!
