Talkative Monday on Sky Sports Football Night Gary Neville discusses Darwin Nunez and his reaction to being sent off against Crystal Palace.

In a moment of absolute madness, Nunes headbutted Joachim Andersen in the second half at Anfield on Monday night, leaving the Reds one player short for the rest of the match.

Nunes has rightly come under fire for his actions and Neville believes the first thing the Uruguayan should do after the game is apologize to each of his teammates.

What was said?

Neville talked about his reaction to Nunes’ ejection.

“In terms of the punishment, Jurgen Klopp will probably have a stern word with him tomorrow or the day after, but when you get sent off, you’re the player who suffers the most. It’s the loneliest place in the world in that dressing room, it’s terrible,” Neville said.

“You’re alone there, you’re scared for your teammates on the pitch, you’ve let them down and you feel like you’ve let them down. You don’t need to say much to a player who gets sent off because it’s horrible enough as it is and you take responsibility. “I’m sure he went into the dressing room after the game and apologized to everyone, I’m sure of that, that’s it.”

These things happen

Nunes will learn a lot from this, and while his teammates may not be too happy with him right now, they will move on quickly.

Indeed, although violent behavior is unacceptable in football, it does happen from time to time.

Even the greatest players in Premier League history have seen red in moments of madness. Steven Gerrard did it in his last game for Manchester United, Wayne Rooney did it in the World Cup quarter-finals and Roy Keane almost once a week.

Nunez had his moment of madness and I hope he doesn’t get it out of his system and we don’t see a similar situation happen again.
