The Game of Thrones prequel airs on HBO Max this weekend, so when you watch House of the Dragon, you’ll see if HBO can hold onto the Iron Throne of fantasy television (Prime Video seems to be taking over for The Lord of the Rings: Episodes of Power).
Release date and time of House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon premieres Sunday (August 21) on HBO and HBO Max (Opens in a new tab). It airs at 9 PM ET.
However, the series revolves around the age-old theme that Game of Thrones has always focused on: the power struggle. Here, we see the path of the first queen at House Targaryen. Yes, long before Daenerys got one of the worst character arcs to end a series, there was Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma Darcy). Rhinera, of pure Valerian blood and loose dragons, faces a great obstacle on her path to power: no woman has ever occupied the Iron Throne before her.
Her greatest threat may be Prince Damon Targaryen (Matt Smith), the younger brother of King Viserys. Regarded as heir to the throne by many – including himself – Daemon is also a rider of dragons. But he is apparently not the one chosen by King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine).

Dragon House Trailers
The first trailer for House of the Dragon begins with an argument over what else: the succession. No, they’re not behind on Succession Season 4: King Viserys of House Targaryen (Paddy Considine) is interested in who will take the throne. The name Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Milly Alcock in younger years and Emma D’Arcy in older years) has been suggested, because she is the first born in the line. This doesn’t seem right to some, as the woman has never occupied the Iron Throne at this point.
In the second trailer for The House of The Dragon, we meet several of the house leaders (and some dragons), as King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) get pledges of allegiance. We’re curious about how strong those promises actually are.
In the first HBO Max trailer for House of the Dragon, we get our first proper look at what Westeros was like 200 years before Game of Thrones.
It is very similar to the Westeros we have come to know, albeit dark and full of platinum hair that was a prominent feature among the Targaryens and other noble Valyrian families.
The Iron Throne also saw a makeover, looking wilder than ever during Game of Thrones and more like what George R.R. Martin imagined when writing the books.
Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t reveal much of what we can expect, aside from the potential for the famous Targaryen dragons to appear and cause carnage – something that was lacking in later seasons of Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon Photo Collection
HBO has released the first set of images from House of the Dragon, ushering in production for the show. One of the photos, shared on Twitter (Opens in a new tab)provides a look at the cast members reading a socially distanced table.
HBO also tweeted individual photos of the House of Dragon cast members at the table, which one fan on Instagram helpfully read in a collage. They include Considine, Smith, Cooke, Toussaint, D’Arcy, and Ifans.
The first set of photos of the cast’s filming scenes have appeared. Matt Smith and Emma Darcy are seen posing on a beach in Cornwall, England. Both sport wigs for Targaryens’ white blonde hair. Smith is the Demon Prince, while Darcy is Princess Rhinera. More on the characters below.

HBO has released official photos of the actors wearing the costume as their characters. The images reveal Matt Smith as Prince Damon Targaryen and Emma Darcy as Princess Rhinera Targaryen; Steve Toussaint as Lord Corliss Philarion (also known as Eel); Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.
Cast Dragon House and Characters
The House of Dragon is led by Paddy Considine, who will play King Viserys, according to Entertainment Weekly (Opens in a new tab). Described as “chosen by the princes of Westeros to succeed the old king, Jaehaerys Targaryen, in the great council of Harrenhal. A warm, kind and respectable man, Viserys would only wish to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do. They do not necessarily make great kings” .
The other main House of the Dragon team members are:
– Olivia Cooke as Aliscent Hightowershe is “the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most beautiful woman of the Seven Kingdoms. She was brought up in the Red Cape, close to the King and his inner circle; she possesses court grace and strong political acumen.”
Cook said metro that Aliscent is “totally different” from her recent role in Pixie, which she described as “really manipulative, complicit and selfish.” Perhaps Aliscent is one of the good eggs in this world.
– Matt Smith as Demon Prince Targaryenwho is described as “King Viserys’ younger brother and heir to the throne. A peerless warrior and dragon driver, Satan possesses the true blood of a dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods throw a coin into the air…”
– Emma Darcy as Princess Rhinera Targaryen“The king’s firstborn child, she is of pure Valerian blood, and she is a dragon rider. Many would say that Rhinera was born with everything… but she was not born a man.”
In February, four more members of the cast were announced:
– Steve Toussaint as Lord Corliss Philaerion, nicknamed “The Serpent” Who will be the master of the house Philaerion. Their bloodline is as old as the House Targaryen, and Velaryon has earned his nickname for being “the most famous marine adventurer in Westeros history.”
– Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryona dragonrider who is the wife of lord corlis philarion. She didn’t get the throne in the Great Council because – to your surprise – “the kingdom preferred its cousin, Viserys, just because he was a male.”
– Rhys Evans as Otto Hightower. As the King’s Hand, Hightower faithfully protects the throne, and King’s brother Daemon (Matt Smith) sees the Monash’s greatest threat.
– Sonoya Mizuno as Misaria. Mesaria had nothing when she arrived in Westeros. Now, having “sold out more times than you can remember,” she’s already earned the trust and confidence of Daemon, heir to the throne.
– Fabian Frankl as Sir Creston Cole, member of King Viserys I Targaryen’s Kingsguard. on him Articles (Opens in a new tab)George RR Martin writes that Sir Creston is “the born son of Agent Lord Blackhaven. He has no right to lands or titles, all he has is his honor and skill of sword and spear. He is a defiant, a hero, a commonsense, beloved by the ladies. He is Lover (or is he?), seducer (or is he?), traitor (or is he?), breaker of hearts and maker of kings…Welcome to Westeros, Fabian. And keep this sword sharp.”
And after being seen in leaked photos, actor Graham McTavish confirmed he’s part of the House of the Dragon cast.
“I’m really having a lot of fun,” he told British fashion magazine Stylist. We have just started. It’s a pretty big project, so we’ll get to know each other. They are lovable people. It’s great, but I can’t tell you much. I can’t really tell you anything about the story! But it does involve a lot of dragons.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to include Outlander’s Mactavish co-star, Sam Heughan. In the same interview, Heogan joked, “Do I exist [House of the Dragon]? He also revealed that he has auditioned for Game of Thrones seven times, for roles including Renly Baratheon and Ser Loras Tyrell.
Dragon House Conspiracy
House of the Dragon is set several hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones. It is based on Martin’s novel “Fire and Blood”, which chronicles the rule of the Targaryens from the beginning. The story begins with Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
House of the Dragon will focus on a specific part of Targaryen history: The Dance of Dragons. It was a bloody and brutal civil war in Targaryen that took place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. (This is just over a century after the first Aegon invasion.)
Star Olivia Cooke revealed that House of the Dragon will not have the gratuitous graphic violence against women that was common on Thrones. I told telegraph (Opens in a new tab) That “I wouldn’t feel comfortable being a part of anything that involved horrible graphic violence towards women for no reason at all, just because they wanted it to be puzzling in a way that would appeal to viewers.”
The death of King Viserys I caused a succession conflict between his daughter from his first marriage, Princess Rhaenyra, and his son from his second marriage, Aegon II. Princess Shireen Baratheon told this story in the fifth season episode of Game of Thrones.
She reminded her father, Stannis, “Brothers fought brothers, dragons fought dragons.” By the time it was over, thousands had died.”
As Shireen pointed out, the conflict affected the Targaryen family, with nearly all of their dragons dying in the war. The monsters remained extinct for a century and a half, until Daenerys Targaryen hatched her three dragons in Game of Thrones.
Episodes of House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon will consist of 10 episodes. While we don’t know the episode titles yet, HBO has revealed the directors.
Directors of House of the Dragon Season 1 include Claire Kellner (East Enders), Geeta Patel (The Witcher), and Greg Yaitannis (House). They join Miguel Saposhnik, who was previously announced as the pilot’s director.
