But that’s the power of Netflix’s Stranger Things soundtrack, which can take a song from a few thousand streams to hundreds of millions.

The reclusive singer has seen her 1985 song “Running Up That Hill” receive a 22,000% increase since the week the series went down, and has since become one of the 30 most streamed songs of 2022. Emmy-nominated Felder says the show’s executive producers Matt and Ross Dover — better known as the Dover Brothers — sought a song that would resonate with the intense and widespread emotional experiences Max (Sadi Sink) was going through. “It immediately struck me with its deep chords of the potential connection with Max’s emotional struggles and took on even greater significance as the Bush song soaked into my conscious awareness,” says Felder.
De-synchronization was Felder’s next task. Bush is selective when it comes to using her songs. So Felder made sure to have pages of text and footage of Bush to review so the singer could see exactly how the scene — and the song — would play out.
Perhaps not coincidentally, Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” was also released within a year of Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” She also made use of Felder’s Needle Drop. At the end of the season, Eddie Monson (Joseph Quinn) plays the song at the Upside Down with the rest of Hawkins’ crew and promises to take on the evil Vecna. Felder says the song was woven into the script during pre-production.
Music Supervisor Robin Urdang “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” sought needle drops suitable for a period of time. Because when Midge went Rachel Brosnahan to a lesbian bar, Ordang wanted to get away from “a well-known typical lesbian ballad. We wanted something underground, and nobody knew. I was looking and searching for property.” The song you used (“I’m Nobody’s A Child” by Miss Beverly Show) may be destined to remain a huge hit, amassing only 5,000 streams, per data from Luminate.
The original songs are less predictable, but the hugely impactful “Euphoria” is as good a musical launching pad as it gets. Zendaya and Labrinth’s “All for Us” has recorded over 300 million streams since its first drop in 2019.
