“House of the Dragon”: who are the characters in the series

Get ready to go back to the world of “Game of Thrones” on Sundays again. HBO’s prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” re-enters Westeros. However, rather than telling a story sprawling across different cities, this series primarily follows the Targaryen family about 200 years before the birth of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen.

Unlike the original “Game of Thrones”, models David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did not participate in “House of the Dragon.” Instead, authors George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condall created the prequel series, which is based on Martin’s book Fire and Blood. The novel tells the long history of House Targaryen over several generations – a second volume of novels is due to be released at some point (first, Martin needs to finish the main “A Song of Ice and Fire” series).

House of the Dragon tells the story of the Dance of Dragons, the war of succession within the House Targaryen. Because it’s been covered extensively in “Fire & Blood,” the entire story is there to read, so viewers of the HBO series should beware of spoilers for upcoming action stories.

Just like the original series, “House of the Dragon” identifies viewers with a plethora of characters right away. There are a lot of complicated political, family, and romantic relationships (and sometimes all three!) between everyone, so here’s a summary of who.

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.
