Chinese box office: ‘New Gods’ sequel beats sequels: Puppy Rise

The Chinese animated movie “New Gods: Yang Jian” was the best movie at the box office in mainland China over the last weekend. Minions: The Rise of Gru opened in third place.

“New Gods: Yang Jian” earned 19.8 million (134 million yuan) in its debut between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. He is ahead of previous winner “Moon Man” who slipped from first to second place with a fourth weekend of $17.8 million (121 million CNY). Moon Man’s balance is now $397 million (2.70 billion CNY).

“New Gods: Yang Jian” is a continuation of the “New Gods” series from Light Chaser Animation, the studio that produced the hugely successful 2021 “New Gods: Nezha Reborn” and 2019’s “White Snake” movie. $67.6 million (456 million Chinese yuan).

The new film revolves around Yang Jian, a legendary character from the Ming dynasty who appears in the historical novel “Investing the Gods”. (The same book was also extracted by Enlight Pictures for its movie “An Outing.”)

“Minions” earned $11.6 million (CNY 78.6 million). This is unlikely to challenge the previous records of the “Minions” and “Despicable Me” franchise in China.

“Despicable Me” was not China’s first movie, “Despicable Me 2” grossed $52.9 million in 2013, and “Despicable Me 3” grossed a whopping $158 million in 2017. The first Minions movie in 2015 grossed $52.9 million. $68.5 million.

Its soft start can partly be explained by the very late notification of the release confirmation – less than two weeks.

IMAX reported that “New Gods: Yang Jian” opened to $1.75 million, or 9.2% of the nationwide total, on its screens. Imax Network in China co-starred with Minions: The Rise of Gru, which grossed $380,000. The award-winning Japanese animated movie “Belle” will cross Imax’s showing in China starting Friday.

Hong Kong’s “Warriors of the Future” sci-fi film slipped to fourth place in its third weekend, but with $10.5 million (CNY71.1 million). Its cumulative progression now stands at $72.2 million (491 million CNY).

At number five, The Fallen Bridge dropped sharply in its second week of release. She earned $3.3 million (22.2 million yuan) in the weekend, for a cumulative 10-day period of $30.6 million (208 million yuan).

Artisan Gateway reports $65.5 million in China weekend total to date, bringing the box office total to $0.48 billion. This reduced the deficit compared to last year to 27%.
