Amazon Studios UK President Georgia Brown talks about investing in local production

Georgia Brown, head of European originals at Amazon Studios in the UK, said that even while Cost of Living and other streaming businesses, such as HBO Max, have discontinued their local assets, Amazon Prime Video has no intention of cutting them back.

“We’ve always had a very different strategy,” Brown said during a panel discussion at the Edinburgh Television Festival, before saying she sticks to Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salk’s mantra of offering a “really curated” slate.

Brown emphasized her commitment to local production, saying, “It has been critical for us to have these local products on the ground. Our strategy has always been ‘local at the local level’.”

“And in fact, what we saw when we could launch globally in 2016 is that all of our audiences were asking for content.”

She added: “Our strategy in this sense has not changed and will not change.”

Brown has not commented on Amazon raising its subscription prices, which comes amid the cost-of-living crisis, saying she represents the studio. “Our mission is to deliver maximum value to our customers through the content we curate and produce,” she said, but acknowledged the increased operating costs.

On Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Brown said she could not comment because “I’m not through MGM” but said, “It’s very exciting.”

“People have grown up with some great movies of their own, and we’re all really excited to have them join the family and I’m really looking forward to what that means for us.”

Brown is joined by her UK team including Head of Originals Dan Grabiner, Director of Originals Development Daisy Mount, CEO of Unclassified Development Fouzia Khan, Lead Originals Written by Johnny Losley and CEO Harjit Chukar.
