Batman: Gotham Knights is a co-op game about fighting crime without the help of the Dark Knight himself. This superhero action game from WB Montreal brings you a unique twist on the beloved Batman: Arkham franchise by highlighting Batman sidekicks, Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood
Featuring an original story that forces our heroes to survive in a world without Batman (and some very interesting villains), Gotham Knights could be DC’s next big title. Here’s everything we know so far, including the game’s trailers, its release date, and some extended looks at the gameplay.
Batman Gotham Knights Trailers
Premiered on DC FanDome, the first trailer for Gotham Knights introduces our heroes while setting up the game’s story. In this original novel, Batman appears to have been killed, forcing his closest partners – Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood – to team up to save Gotham.
As many suspect, the main villains appear to be Court of Owls: a serious crime family from the latest Batman comics with deep ties to the Wayne family. Batman baddie Mr. always appears. Freeze too, so it won’t just be the owls the quartet has to contend with.
The second trailer for Gotham Knights was released during last year’s DC FanDome event and focuses on the game’s story. A sinister voiceover, soon revealed to be the iconic Batman villain Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot, notes that the quartet of heroes “doesn’t stand a chance” against the court. It looks like the events of Gotham Knight will push the Pat family over the edge.
Finally, we gotOfficial Rascals Trailer (Opens in a new tab)During gamescom 2022. This trailer shows the villains Nightwing and the gang will take on the Gotham Knights, some of which we’ve already seen. Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls are two familiar faces from previous trailers, but Harley Quinn and Clayface are the latest additions to Gotham Knights’ rogues gallery.
While it’s nice to see the clips inside the motor, they do little to move the needle. However, the announcement in the end is a bit surprising. The Gotham Knights release date has been pushed back by four days to October 21. Although not a huge change, moving release dates is a rare move in the video game industry. Hopefully, that means the game will be somewhat polished once it arrives.
Batman Gotham Knights release date
Gotham Knight is confirmed for release on October 21, 2022. Originally unveiled with a release date targeting 2021, the game was later pushed back in March of last year to October 25, 2022. Then it was surprisingly lifted during the official trailer for Gamescom 2022 villains. Until October 21.
Regardless, we are now only a few months away from returning to the streets of Gotham. The game will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. A PS4 and Xbox One release of Gotham Knights was planned but recently canceled in order to “provide players with the best possible gaming experience.” The game is now exclusive to next-generation consoles.
Batman Gotham Knights game
Based on the extended game trailer released by WB Montreal, it looks like Gotham Knights will introduce intense combat and open-world exploration of Arkham games with a new co-op twist with some RPG elements. The four playable characters: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin can be leveled up with new equipment and abilities as you progress, and players can team up together online.
Similar to their appearances in previous Batman games, each character will have their own unique strengths and abilities. Batgirl excels in close combat and martial arts, while Nightwing uses his signature Escrima Sticks for long-range and close-range staff attacks. Robin fights with a crew and has stealth abilities, while the volatile Red Hood is an expert in firearms. It also looks like you’ll be able to sync up with your partner and combine your abilities in some exciting team attacks.
Each hero has their own unique traversing abilities, and will even be able to drive vehicles like the famous Batcycle to navigate Gotham’s five fully-explorable neighborhoods.
The game’s second demo gave us an extended look at Red Hood and Nightwing in action. Oddly enough, this show confirms that Red Hood devoid of superpowers “gained new abilities after being revived by the cult of assassins.”
We see the hero jump over the city streets with magical jumping platforms, which is definitely not accurate for the comics, but it does look really fun. We also see Nightwing using a glider to keep up with speed. Each hero will have their own unique way of traversing Gotham City, as well as access to vehicles like Bat’s bike.
The gameplay demo also shows combat in both co-op and single-player. As mentioned above, each hero has their own unique abilities and equipment, and team moves appear to be possible as well allowing heroes to combine their power to cause even greater damage.
This gameplay also highlights the importance of stealth and gives us a sneak peek into the game’s story. It seems the heroes are still struggling to come to terms with Batman’s death, and the absence left by the Dark Knight is definitely a feeling.
Gotham Knights characters
Gotham Knight will feature four playable characters: Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood.
Each hero will have a different set of powers, weapons, and abilities. In addition, each of them will have unique elimination animations and movements. We are sure that every player will quickly find the one that best suits their playing style.
You can also team up with a friend in 2-player co-op. Even better, rumors have suggested that the game might offer full four-player co-op, but so far this has not been confirmed.
