Blueair HealthProtect 7470i review: Price and availability
The Blueair HealthProtect 7470i comes in for a hefty price tag of $759, however, it often sells for around $550. It’s widely available directly from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Blueair. Available in white only.
Blueair HealthProtect 7470i review: Design
The Blueair HealthProtect 7470i is an absolute beast of a machine. This towering white air purifier with black accents looks like a science fiction movie, capturing the attention of anyone around you. With an illuminated LCD screen, color bar that tells you air quality information, and a curved design, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It’s a beautiful but pricey device, which makes it a perfect fit if you’re willing to splurge on something George Lucas might throw in.
The Blueair HealthProtect 7470i is 27 inches long and 12 inches deep, making it one of the tallest air purifiers on the market. The size can be a bit overwhelming and its 30-pound weight can be cumbersome to drag around the flat, but the built-in wheels make it a little less difficult to move. The device is tall, but takes up little space, which makes it surprisingly ideal for smaller dwellings. This air purifier also comes with a handy cord winder on the bottom to store the extra length of cable, which you’ll have plenty of because of the seven-foot power cord. This makes it ideal if you want to move the device to the center of a room, or if power sockets are few and far between.
The LCD screen equipped with the aesthetic iPad shows what the device’s sensors are picking up as well as the settings. It tells you the humidity, the temperature, the amount of filter life left, and of course the air quality. Its sensors are extremely sharp, capable of capturing and displaying three different sizes of particles – from less than one micrometer, such as smoke or bacteria and virus particles, to more than ten micrometers, such as dust or mould. If there is a funky smell in the air, you can be sure that this device will pick it up.
Like most air purifiers, the Blueair HealthProtect 7470i has three fan settings (you can use the app to access more fan speed options), as well as an automatic and night mode. It also has some unique tricks. It comes with Blueair’s trademark HEPASilent Ultrafilter, which is $69 to replace, and a “GermShield” mode that is claimed to activate when in a “germ-prone environment.” This would be ideal for anyone who often deals with germs and viruses at home.
Blueair HealthProtect 7470i review: Ease of use
The device itself is easy to set up and use; Just put the filters in place and plug the power outlet into the source. The added screen at the top presents a lot of information, which can be overwhelming at first, but because of that it can technically do more than just an air purifier. Some of the added settings can’t be seen on the device, but from the app, so be sure to set that up early. It is easy to change the filter itself, just open the right compartment and the filters will come out instantly.
It is also important to look at the side vents if you have a pet because they will be covered in fur in a short period of time. It’s easy to wipe – you can do it with just a swipe of your hand. But, nevertheless, you’ll want to keep an eye on it.
Blueair HealthProtect 7470i review: Performance
CADR tests revealed that the Blueair HealthProtect 7470i was able to quickly and efficiently remove particulates from rooms up to 419 square feet in size. This made it one of the best air purifiers we tested, which somewhat justifies its price. It received a CADR score of 270, 275, and 280, respectively for smoke, dust, and pollen. That’s just below the winning Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto, but it’s still a solid rating, and you get many more features with the 7470i.
This air purifier is fairly silent when running on the lowest setting, and hardly registers a louder noise than the normal residual noise at 35.3dB. At its maximum setting, it hit 48.0 decibels – still below the average conversational volume. However, energy use was above average; Over 24 hours in the auto setting, it drew 0.241 kWh, so all of this data comes at a cost.
When you turn on the device for the first time, the two lights flash white as it senses the air quality in the room. The particle indicator bar is separated into two parts; The right side is the gas indicator and the left side is the particle indicator. Both sides cycle through five different colors depending on the level of pollution, making it easy to read from across the room. It’s so satisfying to see the colors change, that you can literally watch the effect they’re having every minute. The auto setting was very receptive, picking up when food is cooked, smoke is released or animals are approached.
Blueair HealthProtect 7470i review: The app and smart connectivity
Continuing its high-tech dominance, the Blueair HealthProtect 7470i has a companion app that allows you to connect it to your Wi-Fi network. With this, you can control settings remotely, including turning them on or off, or adjusting the fan speed. You can also use the app to create a device schedule, allowing you to turn it off while you’re at work or away from home, saving energy and money. Another useful feature – the app is able to connect to multiple Blueair products, which is useful for those who have more than one Blueair purifier around the house.
However, the app is also the only way to access the night mode or change the LED brightness, which is a bit strange since it has a full color display. The app gives you the same information about air quality.
Blueair HealthProtect 7470i review: Verdict
The Blueair HealthProtect 7470i is a sleek and futuristic device with plenty of bells and whistles that not everyone will use. The touchscreen display that tells you what’s going on around your room is great, but unless you’re really interested in scientific acumen, it’s a little louder. It’s one of the most powerful and effective air purifiers, but that price tag makes it a tough buy.
The Blueair 211+ Auto performed slightly better in CADR tests and the Honeywell HPA300 might be a better value, but neither can provide as much information as the HealthProtect 7470i. The screen on top is also a big plus, but only for those who really want to use it. However, it is a great air purifier if you don’t mind flaunting a quality product.
