Chinese box office: ‘New Gods: Yang Jian’ wins second weekend


The Chinese animated film “New Gods: Yang Jian” was the top box office hit in mainland China for the second weekend in a row.

The film made $13.0 (88.3 million Chinese yuan) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. This was a 34% decrease compared to its opening session of $19.8 million.

About $1.5 million of the film’s weekend gross was netted on Imax screens.

Ten days after Yang Jian was released, the cumulative total was $43.7 million (CNY 297 million). Of that, Emacs now totals $4 million.

“New Gods: Yang Jian” is a continuation of the “New Gods” series from Light Chaser Animation, the studio that produced the hit 2021 “New Gods: Nezha Reborn” and 2019’s “White Snake.” The new movie is about Yang Jian, The legendary Ming dynasty character who appears in the historical novel “Investing the Gods”.

The former “Moon Man” chart star wasn’t far behind, but he remained in second place. It has earned $12.2 million (CNY 83.3 million) and now has a total of $421 million (2.86 billion CNY) since its launch on July 29.

“Warriors of Future,” a Hong Kong-produced science fiction title, took in $7.4 million (50.6 million Chinese yuan) in third place over the weekend. Since its launch on August 5, it has now raised $88.5 million (602 million CNY).

Minions: The Rise of Gru took in $6.5 million (44.4 million CNY) in its second weekend, down 44% from its $11.6 million debut. It now has $24.4 million (166 million yuan) from ten days in Chinese theaters.

Foreign media reported that the Chinese authorities changed the ending of the film to show that crime does not pay. Chinese viewers seem to like him well enough. On ticketing platform Taopiaopiao, they gave it an average of 8.8 out of 10 approval ratings. On Maoyan the score was 9.0.

The highest-rated Japanese animated movie “Belle” was with 1.5 million (10.4 million CNY) and was ranked fifth.

With three animated titles in the top five and the chart looking lower again, the nationwide box office gross over the weekend fell to $45.6 million. The running total for the year to date is now $3.57 billion, about 26% lower than the equivalent result at the same point in 2021.
