Rian Johnson Is ‘Prouder’ Five Years After The Last Jedi

While “The Last Jedi” received widespread critical acclaim, the middle chapter of the “Star Wars” series trilogy proved somewhat divisive among fans.

Looking back at the Galaxy series, writer and director Rian Johnson said he’s “more proud of it five years later.” In an interview with empireJohnson said, “When I was on the racket, I was really rocking the ball.”

He continued, “I think it’s impossible for any of us to get close to ‘Star Wars’ without thinking of it as a myth we grew up with, and how this myth, that story, permeated and affected us. The ultimate intent wasn’t abstraction – the intent was access to the basic and fundamental power of legend. In the end, I hope the film will be an affirmation of the power of the “Star Wars” legend in our lives.”

At the end of “The Last Jedi,” Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) meets his own death and becomes a symbol of hope against evil forces across the galaxy. According to Johnson: “The film’s final visuals, to me, don’t deconstruct the legend of Luke Skywalker, they create it, they embrace it. They totally challenge the idea of, ‘Shake off the past’ and embrace what really matters in his legend and what will inspire the next generation. So for me, The process of abstraction is always in the interest of arriving at something fundamental that is really important.”

Johnson’s next film, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” a sequel to the hugely popular 2019 film, will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10. December 23.
