How to change the Wi-Fi network on the Apple HomePod and HomePod Mini

Without a wireless connection, your Apple HomePod or HomePod Mini is basically useless. Most of its functionality is delivered via the cloud, not the least of which is playing your favorite songs from one of the compatible music services. Therefore, you need a Wi-Fi network.

Most of your HomePod’s life will be spent connected to the same network. However, there may come a time when you need to change that. Perhaps if you moved or bought a new router. Your HomePod will need to learn about the new network. Fortunately, there isn’t much to it, so go ahead.

How to make sure HomePod is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network

Switch Wi-FI Networks on HomePod

There was a time when switching networks on the HomePod likely required a factory reset. Thankfully, there’s no need for that, and making sure you switch things up is actually pretty straightforward.

When you initially set up HomePod, it automatically connects to the same wireless network as your iPhone. This is true for the life of your HomePod, so really, all you have to do is make sure that your iPhone is connected to the network you want to use and that your HomePod should follow.

However, this is not always the case. If things don’t work properly, you’ll get an alert in the Home app on your iPhone. You’ll find it on the homepage, outlined with a circle with an exclamation point inside and Wi-Fi under it. Click on this alert and you will see more information.

It will likely tell you that your HomePod is registered to a different network than your iPhone. Assuming the text is marked in orange It has the correct network, just tap on it and the HomePod will migrate over it.

Thats all about it. Assuming you always ensure that your iPhone is moved first, there won’t be any issues. But if your HomePod is still not connected to the new network, at least it provides you with an easy solution.

Apple’s HomePod Mini is small in size but big on sound and is a great partner for your Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
