U.S. Open: Serena Williams set for Round 2 match against No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit in what could be final singles match!

New York — Singles and doubles play kicked off day three of the US Open, although it was still eight hours before the match that was the center of attention.

Serena Williams plays her first game tonight at Arthur Ashe Stadium, just as she was on the opening day of the tournament.

The No. 2 seed is played by Annette Kontaveit from Estonia.

Williams began what could be the last championship of her career by defeating Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 on Monday night.

Daniil Medvedev is the highest-ranked after Williams against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknish.

Wednesday’s early fixtures included third seed Maria Scarry, who reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows last year, fifth seed Anas Jabeur and Wimbledon runner-up. The opening round matches in the men’s and women’s doubles were also played on the field.

Former champion Andy Murray, 18-year-old Coco Gauff and Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios were also scheduled to compete in the daily singles competitions.

Also playing the night is Bianca Andreescu, the newest women’s champion still on the field. The 2019 winner, who beat Williams in the final, will face 15th seed Beatrice Haddad Maya.

Defending champions Emma Radokano and 2018 and 2020 winner Naomi Osaka lost to Tuesday night.
