Seth Rogen, Pete Davidson, Sebastian Stan Starr in GameStop

Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan and Pete Davidson will lead the cast of “Dumb Money,” an upcoming movie about the GameStop stock market explosion last year.

Based on the fantasy book “The Antisocial Network” by Ben Mezrich, “Dumb Money” by Craig Gillespie, directed from a script written by Rebecca Angelou and Lauren Shuker Bloom. Gillespie previously collaborated with Stan on his 2017 film “I, Tonya” and he and Rogen directed him and Rogen on several episodes of this year’s Hulu Limited Series “Pam & Tommy.” Gillespie produces with Teddy Schwarzman and Ryder Picture Company.

“Dumb Money” focuses on the January 2021 “short squeeze” movement around GameStop, as users of the “Wall Street Bets” Reddit page banded together to artificially increase stock values for the video game retail chain GameStop, which has suffered from a years-long stock price lag. This situation resulted in major financial losses for major hedge funds as well as independent short sellers, and caused calls for more regulation of the stock market. Filming for the project, which focuses on Reddit users behind the short squeeze, is set to begin in September.

Black Bear Pictures will finance the entire film, with Black Bear International handling the foreign distribution rights. Sales of the film will be released at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival this coming September. The United States rights to this film will be represented by UTA Independent Film Group.

Dano will next appear in Steven Spielberg’s adult drama “The Fabelmans” in November, and most recently played the role of Riddler in Matt Reeves’ movie “The Batman.” Next year will see him star in the science fiction drama Astronaut opposite Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan.

Rogen will co-star with Dano in “The Fablemans,” where she plays Benny, a character inspired by Spielberg’s uncle. He will also voice video game character Donkey Kong in next year’s “Mario” from Illumination, and will star with Rose Byrne in the Apple TV + comedy series “Platonic.”

Stan is currently filming A Different Man, about a man who underwent a facial reconstruction, for A24. The actor, best known for playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, also starred in the horror comedy “Fresh” earlier this year.

Davidson, who recently exited “Saturday Night Live” after eight seasons, starred in the A24 slasher “Bodies Bodies” this summer, and will appear with Kaley Cuoco in the romantic comedy “Meet Cute” this fall. He is currently filming the Peacock comedy series “Bupkis” starring alongside Joe Pesci and Edie Falco.

Dano is represented by WME and Anonymous Content. Rogen by Utah and President of Los Angeles Entertainment. Stan of CAA and Brookside Artist Management. Gillespie is represented by UTA and Rumble Media. Davidson, Angelou, Bloom, and Mesrich are represented by the CAA. The Ryder Picture Company is represented by UTA.
